Yes, I think it's the right approach, but it can be a shock when you find out, after buying your brand new shiny toy

Waterstones is probably your best indicator of what's available for the UK customer with something other than a kindle. It's pretty pitiful for Terry. (10 titles). 8 titles for Peter Hamilton. Nothing for David Eddings. 3 for Raymond E Feist. So it's not much better in UK ebook stores.

Stick with your Kindle for longer I'd say. I bought my K2 Int when they first launched and the UK selection of sci-fi/fantasy was utterly pitiful. Almost all self published rubbish and public domain books you could get here. Since then it's improved considerably. Oh don't get me wrong. The selection is still utterly pitiful but I'm seeing new books come online on a weekly basis as the publishers slowly figure things out. We're essentially just at the tipping point of ebooks starting to make inroads. Once the publishers realise the writing is on the wall (Or in this case an ebook reader) things will change pretty rapidly).

I'm still running into new books that I need to buy in pbook form but I'm noticing they're starting to get lower in number. It just takes time.

I download my books from Amazon, maybe it's just my tastes but most of what I want is now available as of last week. There's relatively few titles that I may purchase from elsewhere and strip the DRM, the ones that come to mind are the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series and Andrew Marr's The Making of Modern Britain. To be fair to Amazon they do allow you to browse what is available to you before you order a Kindle, it's the publishers fault rather than theirs. Amazon.com > Kindle Store > Kindle Books > [Drop-Down Menu] United Kingdom. Here's a list of what I'm looking to purchase in the future, it might spark something for you, though I get the feeling we have different tastes.

A Brief History of Time - Stephen Hawking
Quantum Physics Cannot Hurt You - Marcus Chown
The God Delusion - Richard Dawkins
The Audacity of Hope - Barack Obama
The Lord of the Rings - J.R.R. Tolkien
The Lost Symbol - Dan Brown
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - Stieg Larsson
The Kite Runner - Khaled Hosseini
The Stand - Stephen King

I would say that unless you are desperate for the money then keeping the Kindle, even if it's not being used will be a better option because the selection will get better.

True, these things are changing very fast! There is even a decent number of French-language books available now (but not at a decent price unfortunately ). 18 months ago when I bought my Cybook, there was almost nothing.

Hmmm...The God Delusion doesn't seem to be available for me (Canada) however The Greatest Show on Earth is as is Hawking's and President Obama's book. Does anyone know how I can (LEGALLY mind you) get a copy of The God Delusion for my K2?

Unfortunately if it's not offered there then it's probably not "legal" to get it. One method I've heard others using is to register a proxy vpn and use gift certs or U.S. credit cards/address to purchase it.

I personally have the hardback but not the ebook.

Doesn't look good at first glance. According to Inkmesh, it's available at Amazon, Sony Bookstore and B&N. At B&N it's restricted to U.S. customers only. I don't know about Sony, but supposing you can buy it, you'd have to remove the DRM (is that legal in Canada? It isn't in France I think) and convert from ePub to Mobi.

i'd say just add a u.s. mailing address to your amazon.com account. then you can change your country of origin in the "manage my kindle" area on amazon.com

once you've done that you will be able to legally buy all books available for us customers and read them no matter where you are.

Have you tried it yourself? Some online shops check the country where your credit card was issued, or your IP address.

I have used this system.

I have a legitimate US address (I can receive mail from there) and this address is used as my default address which means I can buy books from the US store. My credit cards are issued from Australia, and these are charged when buying US books if I have run out of gift card credit. No need for a proxy ip or VPN. I always download to PC rather than direct to kindle, as the Amazon system knows you are not physically in the US and so will apply a $1.99 charge if you download direct to the kindle.

Yes, I read that thread some time ago. And have not received any emails from Amazon. For what it is worth, they have no legal right to request any of those documents from anyone. They certainly have no right to see someone's passport, military id etc. They are not a financial institution, they are simply an online merchant. Sure they can close your account, but then that raises other issues that they wont want to deal with.
