For the German people who are interested in the Boox they can look on www.elektronischlesen.de. Its the German version of elektronischlezen.nl.

Best wishes for 2010!

Hi Mike

I prefer MOBI as a primary read format as I like the format and the library listings. PDF is OK as well.

I am dead against a ereader tied to a specific store though, which is why I would never buy a Kindle.

Pricewise sub AU$350 is the best way to go for me at least. ereaders not tied to stores seem to be around the AU$500 at the moment and I am not keen at paying that sort of cost.

Cheers

Since the reader does html and does wifi, how easy will it be to get web pages on the device?

Never mind, I watched the video. I want one.

Hi Mike

The more I read about this device, the more I like it.
I was wondering if you could answer a few questions for me:
1. Is the battery user replacable?
2. Are all menu options accessible through the wheel button?
3. What is the cold-boot time?
4. Does it have instant-on (sleep mode)?

Cheers,

m-reader

Hi m-reader,

Mike and the rest of the Onyx Team are on their way to CES. But I can answer these questions for you.

1. Yes, it is user replaceable.
2. Yes, all menu options are available from the wheel.
3. About 25 seconds using my kitchen timer
4. Yes. To sleep you use a momentary push of the power button. For off you hold it for @4 seconds. In the settings menu there are power management settings you can choose to have the Boox 60 automatically go to sleep or off after a period of time.

There are pictures loaded for sleep mode sort of like screen savers and you can add your own.

If you have an example I can load one up and take some pics. I have several scientific papers that include formulas that show nicely.

PDF support is very good. If shows page numbers, handles TOC, hyperlinks within the document, can "scroll" showing parts of 2 pages on the screen at the same time, etc. Footnotes are displayed exactly as they are displayed on my PC using Acrobat reader. I wasnt able to jump to the footnote in the document I just tried. If you have one you would like to me to try you can post it here and i'll see.

Thanks mate, I've pretty much ticked off almost all of my "wants to have in an ereader" check-boxes! One more thing, does it do laundry?
No seriously, this device sounds really impressive!
Do you guys only have the white cover for it?

Cheers,

Yes only the white cover for now. There will be more colors available later in the year and will cost probably $20-$25.

that would be great! i just tried a prs-600 in a shop today and it had some difficulty displaying pdf - in fact it always showed a screenshot of the whole page and beneath it showed the text, event with pdf that were scannes as text. and it didn't zoom "picture"-pdf.

i only got some large files, but i'll make one to try on the boox-60 this evening...

edit: got 2 files - one pdf with ocr and the same one without. (2 pages on 1 sheet) iknow this is a "worst case scenario", but that's what we get from the professors... i'm sure when edited to one page a sheet the reader should be fine, but i'd like to see what it can do with the "originals"...

scanned pdf with ocr
scanned pdf without ocr

I expect. They're made using long-established LCD techniques, and can apparently be made in current factories. No need to pay back investment in construction and engineering.
