Okay, I'll explain it. Consciousness is an illusion generated by a feedback mechanism. Your body actually runs the show. Jeffrey Gray, "Consciousness, Creeping up on the Hard Problem." (Not available in ebook, so far as I know.)

You may now return to your regularly scheduled book.

It is a truth which should be universally acknowledged that the first book of the year should be by Jane Austen. This helps one get one's moral bearings for the new year.

So I'm rereading Mansfield Park.

Quote:
"I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of anything than of a book! When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library."

Thanks, bro! Now if someone will provide me with e-mail addresses for Penrose, Hawking, and the rest, I'll write and let them know they can all go home now.

In all seriousness, though, I believe you're on to something. Benjamin Libet's famous experiments as well as experiments with split-brain patients seem to imply that unconscious neuronal activity precedes conscious knowledge and choice. This appears to be counter-intuitive, but as Carl Sagan said in Cosmos (the TV Series): "Nature is not obligated to conform to our expectations."

And now back to the regularly scheduled topic.

Yeah, apparently at the pro level, the player hits the tennis ball and "decides" to do it afterwards.

(I read like that...don't you?)

From the little watching of tennis that I've done over the years (mainly during the two weeks of Wimbeledon!), it certainly seems to be the case that the players most frequently make a dreadful mistake on an easy shot when returning a high lob -- i.e., when they have enough time to consciously consider how to play the ball.

I'm reading Pet Plague Trilogy by Darrell Bain, having recently finished his "The Long Way Home".

Also for 'dip - in' is "The Complete Idiot's Guide to World Mythology" (!)

On one reader, it will be Merlin by Stephen R. Lawhead (as I'm reading Taliesin right now)

On the other? I don't know yet. Might be a Mercedes Lackey book (got several), or Tailchaser's Song by Tad Williams or The Anubis Gates by Tim Powers. Or it might be something completely different (I've been compteplating (or however you spell that) People of the Wolf (and the rest) by Micheal Gear and his wife.)
