I'm finding *Under the Dome* a mixed blessing, Cassidy. Certainly don't feel the same burning desire to down tools and get back to is as I did with my readings of *The Stand*. Here's hoping, though; King is a sound craftsman. Cheers. Neil

Now onto something completely different - Quanty, by Darrell Bain (with a bit of tweaking by Travis S. Taylor). I've enjoyed his other SF, although its certainly towards the lighter end of SF than most. (EE 'Doc' Smith-like in some ways.) Last edited by pdurrant; 01-02-2010 at 09:01 AM. |

The world-building and politics was done well I thought, with the back-stories kept in their place as back-stories through references and asides, rather than having info-dumps explaining how things came to be as they are. |

I'm reading "Lord of Light" (Zelazny), which is one of those books that I'm trying to "pace" because I like it so much and don't want to finish is too quickly...
I also just started "The Queen of Attolia" (Megan Whalen Turner), which is the sequel to "The Thief", possibly the best children's / YA book I've read. |

I'm reading "Lead Me On" by Victoria Dahl right now, which came out yesterday. Fun contemporary romance.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Movie by Bosley Gravel, or Cannibal Lesbian Zombies from Outer Space - versus- Doctor Clockwork and his Furious Plastic Surgeons of Doom. (you gotta love the title!)
Podunk (Anywhere in the Middle of Nowhere, wikipedia informs me) is populated by such a loveable cast of weirdos! Stewie, the narrator, reminded me of the Catcher in the Rye a little, at least in the first act. The way he talks, the way he always puts himself down when there's obviously so much more about him than meets the eye. Then through the second and third act we follow him on his journey towards maturity, and yes, the making of his epic movie (and no one dare say any different!) At times hilarious, at times even inspirational, this book was much more than I expected. And yes, I was reminded of the Ed Wood movie, but really, if cannibal lesbian zombies are not your thing (I can't imagine why), you can imagine any other artistic achievement in their place. I think every even slightly creative person can relate to Stewie, though we are not all so lucky to be obsessed. ![]() A thank you to Neil and Bewrite for publishing this! |

Many thanks for the brief review of Bosley Gravel's *The Movie* Omk (and please do post it anywhere else you can think of). I agree that in dark times, it's refreshing to come across something so upbeat and fun. Cheers. Neil |

Now some more SF, Ragamuffin by Tobias S. Buckell. I really liked his earlier Crystal Rain, and I suspect this will be equally good. [edit: early signs are good] Last edited by pdurrant; 01-03-2010 at 05:38 PM. |

Sampled some Maureen Miller - Widow's Tale It's a romance -- writing seemed good, story moving--fast paced with intrigue. Only thing stopping me from buying it is the particular theme (gal sounds like she married an abusive husband that has now disappeared and is hopeful (my word) dead.) Miller has another book that sounds pretty good, so I'll probably give that one a try first: http://www.amazon.com/Victory-Cove-e...=AG56TWVU5XWC2
