If you travel outside (or into) the Schengen Treaty area of the EU (the part where internal border controls were abolished) it can certainly happen. I got my bag searched in customs last time I went to Switzerland, for example. Single guy with a beard - I guess I'm "suspicious".

From Peru to the U.S. -- carry-on with 5 ebooks inside was searched. They were taken out and put into a separate tray. No problems. This happened twice.
When I leave the U.S., I imagine it will again happen two times. Don |

I would put up with all the searching nonsense, etc. if they didn't mug me for a SEALED bottle of airport-purchased water, like they did the last time I flew home from Mexico. Absurd, and not something that happens domestically.

If they go with the no eBook Reader rule, I can see the resulting headline:
MobileRead Member Attempts to Take Over Plane with eBook Reader Today a member of the MobileRead Forum, flying under the pseudonym "Queen Z', tried to take over a plane with her eBook reader. But just as she was attempting to do this, she noticed the book she had open on the reader was by an author she hadn't read so she postponed what she was doing for just a minute to read a few pages. But, an hour after the plane landed, she was still absorbed in the book and forgot why she was on the plane in the first place. |

Remember box cutters? My thought then & now was that the best security we could have was not to ban box cutters, but issue them to everyone who boards a plane. If I were a terrorist with a bomb, I'd detonate it at the security checkpoint. (Shhh!) Quote:

My last flight (at the end of December) wasn't any different from normal with security measures and all, but then again, it was a domestic flight, not international. They didn't give me any problem over my electronic devices, though I had a lot of them, and there weren't any special restrictions. I've never had to turn a device on at security, even flying internationally.
My biggest complaint with security is not the rules and regs, though I do think some restrictions are ridiculous, but the people working security. Last time we flew, my dad had all his medications in his checked bag. The security person searching it opened up all the bottles and then dumped them back in the bag without putting the lids back on. It was *fun* having to sort those all out when we got to our destination. (not!) Or when they searched my mom's suitcase, didn't close it properly, and her clothes ended up all over baggage claim - and instead of helping, the people working just stood there and laughed at her. ![]() |

My husband flies frequently for business and it's exhausting. Along with all the security, husband has darkish hair and a goatee and gets closely scrutinized, the airlines have canceled many direct routes. We live 10 minutes away from Dulles which is a decent size airport and on his last few trips he's had to fly out of BWI, an hour and half away, because Dulles doesn't have good connections to medium sized US cities.
His biggest complaint is dealing with personnel of particular airlines. Another reason he drives to BWI is because dealing with Southwest is less frustrating than dealing with United or American. |

You might have heard that they were restricting bathroom access towards the end of the flight and think it's a good idea to wear some Depends undergarments as a backup.
I wouldn't recommend it. It sounds like you're going to have enough trouble. ![]() |

"If tyranny and oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy. Of all the enemies to public liberty, war is perhaps the most to be dreaded because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes; and armies, and debts, and taxes are the known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few. The loss of liberty at home is to be charged to the provisions against danger, real or imagined, from abroad."
– James Madison “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.” – Benjamin Franklin |
