I agree. I see the page numbers on the right as redundent when the status bar is active. It would be great to have an option to turn off the page numbers.

The numbera on the side have more information so they are not redundant. You need them if you are going to reference text in the book.

Actually, I never did test for left justify. But I will next time I am near the SonyStyle store. I'll take up an ePub that specifically says to be left justified and I'll take one that doesn't specify just to see what that does.

A reference to "Page 11" is fine - that will be the same on every reading device. The ambiguity occurs when there's a new ADE page on a screen; if the status bar displays "Page 10-11", and there is no marginal page number, you don't know exactly where the new page starts, so you can't say whether a particular piece of text is on page 10 or page 11.

Page numbers are good for one's own use, for estimating a book's length, for movig around... but not for passing references. PS. Note that with the page numbers in the margins, you still don't know the exact word where the page changes, so you have the same problem ![]() Last edited by Jellby; 12-31-2009 at 11:08 AM. |

I was specifically talking about ADE. Apologies if that wasn't clear.

You could just say that the first word on the line that has the page number in the margin is where the new page starts.

Sounds to me like we should look to a time when they didn't have page numbers yet - namely the Bible, which was one book where people needed references long before the printing press and its uniform editions came out.
Maybe we need an URL scheme that mirrors the "book-chapter-verse" system people use when quoting the bible. If every vendor implemented that, you could share a cross-platform reference. Of course, it'd either be unwieldy because it's much longer than a simple page number, or it'd be short but machine-readable only like the tinyurls and bit.ly-links of today: Easy to type and paste, but impossible to decode just by looking at them. |

This is true. But, if hat you are referencing is clearly say in page 17, then it won't matter what is on the first and/or last line of page 17.

Thanks for the "pencil" tip! I was trying to guide my mother through the upgrade over the phone and we were both starting to get frustrated, not finding what she was doing wrong. And she's got quite slender fingers, too!

People, it seems I need a little more help here. I have a distressed mother on the phone, she organised all her books into folders after the 1.5 upgrade, and now her library is empty. I read you have to activate folder view, but she doesn't know where to find this option. Also, is there any kind of manual for the new firmware (as I understand a lot of features have been added). I would probably be able to figure it all out if I had the cybook in my hands, but over the phone it's pretty difficult...
Thanks for any help! |

Two possibilities:
1. She's navigated up to the "top" of the file system so that the books aren't shown. What exactly does the library screen show? 2. She has a corrupt file system and all the books really have disappeared. |
