Adobe Digital Editions forum

With all the people coming here and having trouble with ADE, I do think a forum section for ADE would be a rather good idea.

That certainly would have been helpful to me when I was setting it up. So yes sounds like a good idea.

At the moment the Reading Software Forum seems to be the best place for topics regarding ADE. Anyway, i see another problem: Currently a lot of questions regarding ADE are asked in conjuncting with the Sony devices and i'm afraid that we will get a mix of ADE+Sony questions in a ADE-forum as well as in the Sony forum(s). Am i right in thinking that the latest version of the Sony Library Software doesn't require ADE to be installed to authorize the device?

ADE is integrated in that software

What do you mean exactly with "integrated"? Is ADE integrated "under the hood" or has the user to use the ADE-interface within Sony's software?

It is under the hood, that means it is used as the reading interface. It is seamlessly integrated!

ADE is not the same thing as RMSDK. Adobe Digital Editions is the desktop software that we produce. Reader Mobile SDK is the kit that various devices and Sony's desktop software is based on, and the key here is "based on". RMSDK just provides the rendering, the user interface is up to implementers.

Problems (and solutions/workarounds) that you have with Sony EBL may or may not be the same problems you have with ADE, in the same way that problems you have with a COOL-er may or may not be the same problems you have with the Nook.

Calling them the same thing just adds to everbody's confusion.

You're of course right! It's just sometimes hard to communicate the difference!

Thanks for the explanation, Jim. I didn't know that Sony uses the RMSDK on the desktop.

That's the problem i'm talking about. Usually a user doesn't know whether the problem is a Sony/Interead/Whatever issue or an issue with "ADE". Please don't expect that a consumer knows what the RMSDK is. If it looks like ADE, then it is ADE.

I'm still afraid that users can't know such details and will post their problems in the "wrong" forum section.

ADE does need a forum of it's own for help and support. And if people with a Sony Reader need help, then that's fine too. The mods can move the threads to the ADE forum as needed.

Unfortunately posters are unhappy about moving their threads in in the majority of cases. Do you really think that we should create a new structrure that would be asking for such trouble? I'm getting sick of being demonized for moving threads just because requested forums aren't clear/intuitive enough for new(er) members.

The next statement is just my opinion and not necessarily the opinion of the whole moderation team:

If an ADE-forum will be created then i would not move every thread in question from a device-specific forum to the ADE-forum. (except the OP requests his/her thread to be moved)

But if the thread is more about ADE then it is the device, then the thread should be moved if there was an ADE forum.

I try to see that from the point of view of a new member who just bought a new ebook reading device and needs help to get the device and the software working. From that point of view we must be talking about pointless nuances. Let's table the discussion, ok?

Current status: The request for a ADE forum is in discussion in the moderation team.
