We can pay a huge range of prices. Anything from about 40p (US 80c) for the supermarket's own cheap brand, up to well over £1 (US$2) for some fancy organic, free-range kind of loaf . I've just checked the one I bought this morning - that was a small brown organic "wholemeal" loaf and cost 55p (just over $1).

I prefer my bread raised in a loaf pan, where it can't move around too much and get all tough and stringy. My wife (wheat) and I (white) compromised on a Whitewheat bread -- it looks and mostly tastes like white, but is textured more like wheat, and is supposedly better for me.

Well, it sounds like not only is your currency is worth more compared to ours, it also actually buys more. Stinks to be us, I guess.

Wait, that probably includes VAT, doesn't it? ... that makes it even worse ....

Ah, well, at least our gas is still (a bit) cheaper ... for the moment, anyway.

There's no VAT on food, so that's not a factor.

I visit the US quite often, and most "everyday" things I'd say cost pretty much the same in the US and UK in real terms. Some things we pay more for (eg the current cost of petrol (gas) here is about 93p a litre - that's about $7.10 per US gallon ); some things we pay less for (eg car insurance, because our courts don't pay out the crazy sums for personal injury that US courts do). Overall, though, I'd say it works out pretty similar.

Would love to have one but 1 thing keeps me from buy it, a backlit feature, as I read 90% of the time at bedtime that's one thing I must consider. What are your experiences?

For a lot of folks, the lack of back lighting is a show-stopper, but the majority of folks find they can make due well enough with a battery operated book-light, or with a good, old-fashioned bedside lamp (I use one or the other, myself, depending on the circumstances). There are a couple of threads in the Reader Accessories sub-forum that discuss various types of book-lights, if you want an idea of what has and hasn't worked for others.

E-ink is opaque, hence can't be backlit. Think of it as a book - an old-fashioned paper book. Use a reading light. Works great! .

Hello everybody!

Ich bin dann wohl der 2. deutsche!

I bought my Reader in January during an 6 month study exchange in the U.S.. Thanks to taxes it was $385!
It is a very nice gadget and I never bought a paper book since that date.
At the moment I got more time to play with my reader so I decided to register after 8 weeks of reading only.
I think this board has a great community and some people do a very good job on reversengineering, "flashing" and hacking the reader.

The only problem is that there are not so much E-Books, written in german, avaible.

Hi all.

I got my sony reader from Bhphoto NY to Australia

The book was here within 1 week!
I got 150 us bonus of books at Connect Reader, but alas I cannot get anymore there as I have to have an American credit card.I bought a pdf book from ebooks.com and it does not work in the sony reader which is a shame so I really would like sony to come to Australia so I can buy some more books.

I love my sony reader.

Check out the BlackMask DVD from silkpagoda.com -- it's available in Sony Reader format and has something close to 10,000 books, already formatted. Most are available from Project Gutenberg (both the US and Australian versions) but there are some on the BlackMask DVD which aren't available from PG.

I realize those aren't the latest releases, but at least you can have a large library of fun reads!

After much deliberation, not with the wife but with the pillow, finally decide to buy it on ebay for $413.00 around £210.00 with shipping (Ups or Fedex). Hope to get it before the holiday weekend and show it off at the beach . Now I'm on my way to order the Sony Reader Executive Jacket in brown from M-edge.

Regards.

Why why why? are you paying more for it then it's sold for in the USA? You are buying your Sony Reader from a SCAM artist. Everyone who puts up a Sony Reader on ebay for more then it cost is SCAMMING you. You got taken big time. You got ripped off. I'm sorry, but never ever purchase a Sony Reader from anyone on ebay. I bet the listers don't even have the Reader. They get your money, go buy one and then keep the profit. They sell them for MORE THEN THEN SHOPS SELL THEM FOR!

If I had bought it from B&H it would have come to $380.00 including $81 shipping so it was only $33 more from ebay ,I can deal with that....

I've paid more than it cost in the USA too, because I've bought it through E-bay. But I don't feel like I've been scammed. First off, there is nothing wrong if they want to make a profit. Everyone does.
My reason to buy it through ebay was
1) I couldn't find a store that is willing to ship it to europe within the same day with fedex or ups so it will take longer before I got mine. The seller on Ebay can sent them the same day, while for a store I'd have to wait.
2) The store is not willing to write down a lower price on the package or write it as a gift. I'd have to pay import taxes then, which is 20% extra anyway.
3) The reader is new anyway, so I don't mind.
4) I can use my paypal account to pay. I couldn't transfer it to my bank anyway because of the low dollar->euro conversion. Might as well use it to buy something nice.

but most importantly...
5) I didn't knew about bhphoto when I bought mine... all the other online stores (through the sony dealerpage) I went to didn't want to ship to europe.

I paid way too much for it, but well... i'm still happy with it
