Just finished 'Beggars in Spain' by Nancy Kress. I liked the premise, but felt it was not developed very well. Some of the science seemed off to me, and the 'plot' was prioritized over the 'characters.' It felt like a first draft that could have been amazing with some depth/editing. I'm thinking of going for 'Last Night in Twisted River' next. It is loooong, and I have been reading more short stuff lately to try and get through my to-read pile. Time for something different.

It's been a while but I think I remember having the same reaction. If I remember right it was originally a short story that she expanded to a novel then sequel(s). The shorter version was better I think.

I HIGHLY recommend "Twisted River" it was probably the best thing I've read this year.

I'm not just a reader, I'm a re-reader. I assume most folks here are, or why bother with eBooks, eh? Anyway, I just finished The Sorceress of Karres by Flint and Freer, Warrior Woman by Marion Zimmer Bradley, and Nobody's Prize by Esther Friesner. I also read some of the short stories from the Grantville Gazette eMagazines, mostly in Volume one.

I just bough books 1 - 7 of the Gor series by John Norman, but I'm saving those for the next big snow, or the next hurricane if it doesn't snow again in Virginia this winter.

I also read Dragonsong by McCaffrey and Guns of the South by Turtledove, but not as eBooks. Neither appears to be offered as eBooks. (except of course for really bad scans.)

Hmm... I wasn't very impressed with this. Far too many people, places, events and jumping around in time to be coherent, at least for me. Some of the incidents were done well, but just far too much going on, and being told from slightly different perspectives. So we'd find out about an event one way, and then the narrative would jump to another viewpoint, and we'd eventually see the event again. Working out whether a particular thing had happened when the scene jumped was hard - I just can't keep track of what had happened by "May, 1634", for example, in my head while reading.

Disappointing.

Now onto the second set of Bolo short stories - Bolos II - The Unconquerable, recently re-issued by Baen. And so far, I'm enjoying this a lot more.

Read Kelly Link's short story "Stone Animals" what a story, very evocative of some Edgar Allen Poe short stories.

"Under the Dome" Outstanding, so far.......I'm halfway thru.

I can surely see this as a movie, as long as they stick to the original plot..........

are you listening, SK?

Finished The Master and Margarita. The end was a bit disappointing but I loved the book anyway. I named it as my favorite book of 2009 in another thread, but on second thought Touch the Water, Touch the Wind by Amos Oz may better deserve that title.

The biography of Louis XIV is interesting and obviously well researched, though a little dry. Maybe a little too heavy on anecdotal detail to my taste, but the bigger picture does show through those details.

Now I should probably try to finish Tomorrow, which I kind of abandoned in the last few weeks.

I just started "A Catered Birthday Party" by Isis Crawford, which I got as a freebie on Sony a few weeks ago. Not sure if I'm going to like it.

I read the first Percy Jackson book, The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. The best I can say about it is that it makes you appreciate how good a writer J.K. Rowling is.

I got it as a freebie too. Started it, and then got distracted. I think I might like it better if I had started with the beginning of the series. Actually, I'm having trouble settling on what I want to read next. I've started several and can't stick with one.

I'm doing lots of re-reading too. Currently working on:
Dragonrider, by Anne McCaffrey
Obsidian Butterfly, by Laurell K Hamilton
Kushiel's Scion, by Jacqueline Carey (first reading)
Greywalker, by Kat Richardson (audiobook)

I started that one too--free for Kindle. But I haven't gotten that far into it and...I'm with you. Not sure I'll like it yet! It's a slow-starter.

Just finishing up _Murder Must Advertise_... I am leaving on a Cruise to the Carribean tomorrow so I just bought _World Without End_ and zapped it to my Kindle with Whispernet to have on the cruise... I am sure I won't finish it. But, if I do I also have Metagame for next.. and a couple others too .... but I doubt I will finish WWOE on the cruise.

See you all in a week or so.
