Good catch. I tried and was able to confirm the lack of cursor

Hmm not sure what I can do about that, as it happens at the Qt level, not in calibre code. Is the cursor missing only for the main screen, not in other text fields.

Yes, if I go to the Edit Meta Information dialog box, I have an insertion cursor.

Hmm, I'll see if I can find a solution. It may have to do with using a custom delegate for those fields.

Snow leopard has Python 2.6.1. But, you could just have people use macports to update to what is needed rather than having 200MB d/l files. That must use a lot of bandwidth.

I'm surprised that Mac doesn't give you an easy built in way to keep up to date with these tools an libraries. But I have had very little problems with Macports.

I thought there was a Python 3... are they developing 2.x and 3.x in parallel? It seems like very few people are using 3 and it is not backward compatible.

Thanks, unfortunately the missing cursor is a bug in Qt, I couldn't find a workaround for it.

Yes it appears that athe the moment they are both being developed - probably because as you mention there are backwards compatibility issues. I believe that Python 3 also has some performance issues compared to Python 2 - but these will hopefully be addressed as Python 3 matures.

I guess at some point the development of Python 2 will come to a halt and then there will be pressure to upgrade to Python 3. I have no idea how big a job this wil be for Calibre - particular with all the dependencies that will also need to become Python 3 compatible as well.

I was wondering about that as well. I guess a MacPort could reduce size significantly. Anybody interested?

actually only if you are able to compile the application in question. and then you move your "size-problem" from the application to MacPorts.

I've tried to build Python 2.6.4 on my 10.6, because the binary on the python.org is universal. But the make breaks with:

Failed to find the necessary bits to build these modules:
_bsddb dl gdbm
imageop linuxaudiodev ossaudiodev
readline spwd sunaudiodev
To find the necessary bits, look in setup.py in detect_modules() for the module's name.

and this is just the start because every piece you find and add depends on something other.
So yeah, better to go via MacPorts but then the dependences clutter the system the same.
And Calibre isn't easy to compile either.

True - but I already got QT for VLC and Sigil installed - so with MacPort instead of three QT installations I would have only one. The MacPorts version if VLC is 4.9M and the one of Sigil 3.0M.

MacPorts already got Python 2.6 which compiles fine with 10.6. Not need to reinvent the wheel here.

Dependents of dependent are already handled by other maintainer. With over 6600 ports most stuff is already done in MacPorts.

Feel free to create a MacPorts version of calibre, but you would have to maintain it yourself as I am not interested.

Yes, but with MacPorts the dependencies only need to be installed and compiled once. Once they exist doing a port update calibre will only get the new calibre code and won't need to d/l update dependencies unless the are required.

Of course... calibre is updated very often so if someone does do a macport it might be an active job to keep it up to date. (I'm assuming every release of calibre will mean the port needs to be updated... but I'm not sure that is true never having authored a macport and only using them.)

BOb

PS: That all said... I have no problem with the current size. I have plenty of bandwidth and hard drive space. But, no everyone lives in the US with unlimited broadband Internet connections.
