Sometimes you just have to keep trying. Went back to Jetbook, found the forums and found the ftp references people have been talking about.
Apparently 14n is still the newest, and still doesn't fix the _really_ annoying problem of cutting of line, or at least words, between pages. |

I've done a lot of testing and reading on my 2 lites (firmware M, not N yet) and have not seen that line/word cutting problem at all- not even once. If you are using an SD card, try reformatting it (FAT, not FAT32) in My Computer (right click, Format, UNcheck Quick Format) then reload books. Then press the reset button on the Lite.

You've done this testing on DRMed ereader.com pdb files? I have this problem and I'm sure it has nothing to do any corruption of my sd card. All other non-DRMed formats that I have tried read fine. The ereader.com files load but have sections of text missing between the pages, meaning you reach the bottom and when you change pages, the sentences don't match and you are missing a number of words. I also have used both the m and n firmware and have the same problem. Other people on this forum as well as on the Ectaco forum have the same issue. It's a real problem that is somehow firmware related. The only way these books display properly for me is if you put then on the smallest font setting, presumably the original font, then there are not gaps.

I first noted the missing lines reading out of the internal memory. Now I've tried it with a 512 SD card, and see the same thing. It's present in every secure eReader file I've downloaded from eReader, both on the internal memory and the SD card. I also have one non-DRM pdb file, and see the same problem. It's not on every page, just every once in a while. I can't see any pattern.
I'm going to try your suggestion of resetting the unit to see it that has any effect. I'm using 14m. |

I removed the SD card and reset the unit, then opened a secure eReader Book (Reserved for the Cat by Mercedes Lackey). The same problem. Every so often some text is missing. I can shift to landscape and read the missing text, but then in a few pages some text will be missing again in landscape mode.
So I'm back to reading my books on my netbook (in Linux) and on my Palm Tungsten :-(. I really like the form factor of the Jetbook Lite and it works well with some text files. But most of my ebooks are secure eReader. I bought this from ereader.com with every expectation that it would work well with their books. If the problem isn't solved soon I'm going to have to try to return it as defective. By definition a functional ereader should show all the text. Maybe I'll wind up with a Nook, or maybe just spend the bigger bucks and get a tablet netbook. There should be software available to read almost any format on that! |

I can't help but think that Ecataco will fix the problem fairly quickly since the Jetbook Lite is being sold as a promotion at ereader.com. People are going to get angry very quickly when they start receiving their units and can't read books from the site that sold them the device. I'm not going to return my device because I like it too darn much. I have plenty of public domain books and a number of fictionwise books in mobipocket format that I've converted to epub (with which I've had no problems at all). I'm confident that Ectaco will work this all out, hopefully sooner rather than later.

yes, I think this problem will be fixed with new firmware very soon. I tried to read PDB books with font size 16 and I didn't find the problem of cutting of line with this font size.
This font size is too small for me but still readable. Last edited by Kris777; 12-25-2009 at 12:14 AM. |

Sorry, I did not read your post closely enough. I have not tested my Lite with any DRM files. I'll watch for that when I buy my first book. |

Current version 0.15 supports all books on www.ereader.com and all PDB-books.
All books at www.barnesandnobel.com are available in PDB format. So You can easily download any ebook from the most popular book store in the USA – Barnes and Nobel. Please, verify if You have the current version of Jetbook. Go to Settings – System Settings – Firmware Version. If You have 0.14, please update Your Jetbook to 0.15: 1. Download and unpack the firmware package and then transfer the Data, firmware, and reflash_nor folders to the root directory of an SD card. Make sure your SD card does not contain any files other than those found in the firmware package. 2. Place the SD card into your jetBook SD slot. 3. Press the Reset button. The device will turn off. Do not turn it on. 4. Press and hold the On/Off button and right arrow key simultaneously until the jetBook logo appears on the screen. 5. The update process will take about 10 – 15 minutes. WARNING! Do not press any keys on your jetBook while updating is in progress! 6. When the update process is complete, press the Reset button. The device will turn off. 7. Press and hold the On/Off button for 3 seconds. Release the button. jetBook will start within 1 minute. 8. Firmware update process is completed at this point. ftp://custftp:FQSswyvGQ20So@ftp.ecta.../Lite_0.15.exe If You have any problems to update Your Jetbook to the current version, please contact ECTACO Tech Support over email pavel@ectaco.com or by phone 1-718-728-6110 |

The firmware seems to work as advertised. It opened a PDB DRMed ebook from ereader.com and there was no lost text at the end of the page. Also, there is a setting now to change from justified to left aligned. The book takes a while to open completely the first time, but you can start reading right away. It doesn't repeat this behavior after you've opened the book, moved away to another menu and then come back to the book.
Edit: I just tested something else. It seems that the problem with the reader asking for unlock information for each ebook has been solved as well. I loaded a couple of other ereader.com books that I'm pretty sure I hadn't opened before and the JBL didn't ask for the unlock codes. Hopefully others can confirm this. Is it possible to read epub books that I download from the New York Public Library on my Jetbook Lite? Adobe Digital Editions says I can copy it to any device and for something I downloaded today says it will work until February 1st, but when I copy the file to the memory card on my Jetbook it seems to say there is only one page and it is blank. Am I doing something wrong, or is it not possible to read library books?
