If it ran Windows, I'd be right up there with you. I don't have anything against Android, mind you (or Linux, or Mac), but the fact remains, Android doesn't yet have the apps to read all the formats; and I'm not gambling that developers will get to those in a timely manner.

According to the specification page, enTourage eDGe supports epub and PDF. http://www.entourageedge.com/devices...rage-edge.html |

Interesting. I just went to that site and to the "new" ebooks tab and it looks almost identical to the Sony Bookstore....

In terms of the books that are listed, or simply appearance? I've seen many sites that obviously use the same software but have widely different content (forums are a definite example). It would seem strange, to me, if the enTourage site listed the same books as Sony-unless they're getting their books from Sony (and I have no idea why they would do that, if they are).

Both, that's what struck me about it. Same books offered, (including Google), same images, slightly different layout, same categories etc. ... https://ebookstore.sony.com/mb_us/Homepage.flow and http://www.entourageedge.com/e-books.html Last edited by kennyc; 12-24-2009 at 01:59 PM.

Anyway - yes, I realize all those function quite well as ereaders, but I guess I'm looking for the whole enchilada. I don't want another device that only reads a couple of DRM'd formats. I want a tablet or dual screen device like this that reads everything. Unfortunately, at this point in time, to do that - it has to run Windows. As far as I know (and please, correct me if I'm wrong, I'd be thrilled to be wrong on this occasion), Windows is the only OS that supports every DRM'd ebook format software out there with no conversions necessary.

And frankly, I don't really give a s**t that the Cybook won't read .imp or .lit, or .rb... I don't *have* any! So if the Cybook can read these ebook formats, then I'm pretty sure that the EDGE can be made to do so - under Linux. So pardon me if I get out my copy of the World's Tiniest Violin to play in pity for your desires. Derek

Alas, Adobe DE doesn't have a Linux version if I understand correctly. Although I'm not sure why... I can't imagine it would be hard to get the OS X Version working on Linux. BOb

And I said a Pixel-Qi netbook anyway, not a dual screen device. There's relatively little need for a dual screen device like this when you don't have the horrible bottlenecking of Vizplex. I think Mirasol would make a better candidate for a dual screen device than Pixel Qi.

The best part of a dedicated e-reader is that it is light and portable and low-maintenance, not needed to be charged frequently. I brought my Kindle with me on a 3 week trip to Tanzania and was able to read the whole time, even though I was unable to charge once. Plus it is light enough to easily hold in one hand for a long time, just like a paperback. So, again I have to say I think this device really doesn't serve much of a need -- you can get dedicated devices that fit their respective tasks much better. Just MHO of course. -Marcy

No, Marcy - I think you're missing the point, dear...this device is meant to combine the luxuries of an eReader and a NETBOOK, at best - NOT a laptop. I have no intentions of ridding myself of my laptop as far as heavy usage is concerned, but as far as having a device to kill some time with web surfing at an airport or local Hotspot, then this could be the way to go - no need to lug my netbook around anymore, which is WAY too bulky to be an eReader. Make sense? |
