I fixed her activation counts.
Had her reauthorize ADE, and make sure the books work correctly with the given AdobeID Then had her authorize her reader (some books showed as protected, but recopying from the computer fixed that). The bookstores in questions were good enough to allow for redownloads So it was a problem with multiple IDs. The usual case for this is an anonymous activation, and then authorizing to an AdobeID afterwards (and previously having used that AdobeID to authorize another computer), however since the latest version of the Sony EBL will now create an AdobeID to match your Sony ID, this has created new warning dialogs for people to ignore. |

Jim reset the activations, I reauthorised the computer using the same adobe ID, got it to recognise the ereader (I had to use the CTRL-SHIFT-E key combination) and then had an error message saying there was a problem installingn the reader software. I also couldn't open some of the purchased ebooks. My heart sank. But I pressed on, deleted the titles I couldn't open and reimported them having previously downloaded them again into ADE.
All of which I had already tried before without success either in ADE or Reader but somehow it worked this time. As I say, I don't know what she did to make it go wrong - maybe she did inadvertently set up another Adobe ID through installing the ereader before she authorised the computer- but it works now and it seems to be down to what Jim did when he reset the activations. I don't know what the reader "software error" was but it seems to work fine though it was slow to import big files. Edit I didn't see before I posted this that Jim had already said the same thing and it looks like it was the second Adobe ID that was the problem. My darling daughter is highly intelligent but she hasn't got the sense she was born with when it comes to reading instructions. Sigh! Last edited by baltic; 12-24-2009 at 12:33 PM. |

We've come up with a good potential solution (a different way of thinking about this), but aren't ready to discuss it publicly yet. |

Also, what are the plans for: 1. ADE supporting B&Ns eReader/ePub DRM files? Is there a version out that does it yet? 2. A Linux version of ADE? There was talk about it initially but it seems to have dropped off the radar. BOb |

(Total Ebook/reader Noob here) I just saw this thread and am hoping I can get some resolution to my problem as well. I did almost the same thing as the OP. I bought my wife a PRS600 for Christmas and thought I would be clever and buy her some books to load on Christmas morning. I did all of this in November using my laptop purchasing several books in Sony's Ebook store. Then, closer to Christmas I authorized our home desktop computer at the Sony store since that is the computer my wife would normally use. Christmas morning I proudly watch her open her present and then try to 'authorize' her reader and things went south fast. Long story short...got all the new updated software/firmware/Adobe ID stuff done and was able to transfer 4 of 6 books to new reader (2 had not yet been converted to Epub by Sony). But...everytime I logged into the store it said that our PC was authorized to another account ( I have no idea what...we only have one Adobe ID account)and did I really want to 'reauthorize' our PC...I clicked yes each time and it worked. Last night, trying to logon to see if 2 books were available yet in Epub format the store says our PC has exceeded the maximum number of authorizations and it has been a tech support hell ever since. Sony told me to contact Adobe to "get more space on my account"..I did..they said start a Web portal incident and I might be contacted in 3 days...what a mess. All I would like is for my home computer to be 'authorized' so it can work with the still 'authorized' ereader. This DRM stuff is so difficult. Sorry for the long post but can anybody tell me how to start over so this thing works. Please? Thanks

Sorry to bump .I have got a problem i have previously bought a book and it went through ADE all ok and was transferred onyto my reader no probs but today when i bought a book my reader doesnt come up in ADE. I also imported the book into the sony library and tried to drop and drag but got a warning message saying that the ebbok cannot be transferred as it is authorised to another user
Previously had problems with latest version of Sony E library which wouldnt open so was running with version 2.5 but decided to try an update to the latest version again and lo and behold it worked and now opens and when i opened ADE it recognised my Reader straight away and let me transfer my book. What a stroke of luck Last edited by Kiwimick; 12-29-2009 at 05:26 PM. Reason: Fixed |

It does sound very similar to our problem inasmuch as you bought books before installing the ereader and then had the problem with transferring them afterwards. However we didn't have to authorise the ereader at the Sony store since we can't use the Sony store in the UK for copyright reasons. We therefore only had to authorise the computer in ADE and get ADE to recognise the Ereader. From what Jim said our problem seemed to arise because she had not authorised her laptop in ADE until after installing the Sony software by which time Sony had set up a separate Adobe ID After our little problem I delivered myself of a few well chosen words to my daughter on the topic of not just ignoring warning dialogues but she assured me in genuinely aggrieved tones that she has only ever used the same email address and password so it should be the same Adobe ID. Does anyone know if it is possible that Sony could set up a separate Adobe ID with the same email address and password if you have not previously authorised your computer to ADE? If that did happen I could understand that she would have thought it was OK to ignore the warning screen because she would have thought it was the same Adobe ID. I'm not convinced I believe her but if so, it must be a disaster waiting to happen |

The whole process is a pain, especially when you have a MAC.
Mine hasn't worked properly since Sony upgraded to V3.1 of the reader. In the Mac, The Sony software detects the reader ok but whenever you go to the (UK) stores page it keeps asking you to register. The ADE V1.7 on the MAC refuses to see the reader now (It used to though). I've raised this with Adobe but getting nowhere so far. The reader in the about screen says it isn't registered now. Well it was and I can still read my (DRM'd) books In Windows under parallels, the Windows Sony software won't run, but at least the ADE 1.7 sees the reader and can transfer books. Neither Sony nor ADE really give a clue as to how many times you've registered or not. I do try to remember to unregister before each re-install. The whole process seems determined to be extremely complex, especially when it goes belly up. Good isn't it... Howard |

I am no computer expert by any means but I have a theory what happened. BTW - my problem seems to be resolved due to Jim's assistance...results posted in other thread. Anyway, I seem to remember that as I was activating/authorizing my wife's new ereader with Sony, thay had completely changed their book formats and I was told I had to redownload them in ePub format and then get an AdobeID before I could authenticate. This was all new to me but I believe the Sony software had created an AdobeID in the background even though I had gone to Adobe's site and logged in there. Somehow, I think the Sony site thought there were two seperate account (there weren't) so it kept telling me that my PC was authorized to another account (the silent one created by the Sony software??) so I re authorized each time I logged in not knowing that I was spending my activations...thus the problem. Jim got it straightened out and I authorized the PC thru ADE and later the Sony store recognized my PC and I think the problem is solved.

My sympathies, I understand the frustration you must be feeling. You don't say if the ereader is yours or another that of another family member. If it is someone else's ereader but you both use the same computer and you each have separate Adobe IDs you won't be able to share a library - see post 4 above by Dreams. If it is just you then it seems to come down to how many authorisations you have used up for a particular Adobe ID. If the problem is that you have used up all your Adobe authorisations then Adobe are very helpful (Jim in particular!!) about resetting them but you have to do it through their web based support, not on the phone. If it's any consoloation, once you get past this initial hurdle it does seem to work very smoothly. But it would be nice if Adobe could have the same feature you get with Itunes, where you can share a library on the same domestic newtwork |
