Read in conjunction with his poem, "Who Are We?", it presents a vivid and disturbing portrait of how the Nazi horrors left indelible scars that still haunt families over 60 years later.
Somewhat in that vein is "Away" by Amy Bloom - as in, its protagonist is an early 20th century russian progrom survivor. There is a very strong sense of survival and anger running at the core of this story, and it makes it very interesting. Also very depressive - it was not the book I should have chosen to read in november-december - the darkest months of the year - but I'm not unhappy I did.

Currently reading the Xanth series. I'm on Book 7, Dragon on a Pedestal.

I've been playing Dragon Age as well as been practicing for our church's Christmas choir presentation. Otherwise I'd most likely be on Book 13 or 14.

My Name is Red is my suggestion for Orhan Pamuk, it's a fantastic book.

I read it last year, it's great!

I'm reading "The Thief" by Megan Whalen Turner and am about halfway through. I have a feeling that it will have a really good ending and I am planning on buying the rest of the series after I finish this book... I SHOULD be reading Herodotus' account of Egypt (for a Greek class) and am a quarter of the way through it but just can't seem to get myself to finish it. Maybe after Christmas. Or New Year's

Reading "Opening Atlantis" by Harry Turtledove. It is a different alt histroy than his usual in that it takes the pov of only one man so far. Interesting read about what would history have been like if a large island existed in southish lattitudes in the Atlantic between Europe and North America starting in 1451.

I liked the Xanth books. I haven't read any for while though.

Hmm... checking, it looks like they're still in the process of getting the backlist out. Only 1-9, 13-15, 24, 27 and 30 available.

But with the current fictionwise offers I can get 3-9 (I have 1&2 already as the bundle) for just $2.52 each. Too good to pass up.

Thanks for reminding me of them!

It's the only book I read by Pamuk, and it's not depressing, I think you'd be safe reading it now, Ea I found it interesting but unfortunately the horrid French translation ruined it for me.

I only read one book by Pamuk, the non-fiction Istanbul. It was a very interesting book but I didn't much care for the writing style, so I hesitate trying another one by him.

Just finished Fresh by Mark McNay. It was ok, but not as good as I expected.

Just finished Life After Death by Dinesh D'Souza and wasn't impressed. It was billed as a scientific investigation of the possibility of life after death. But it was 99.9% philosophy and largely a failed attack on Richard Dawkins and other science atheists. The sole science the author mentions is the near death experience that some people experience after a serious accident or such.

I read this because I read a Dawkins book a few months ago and wanted to give the opposition a chance to prove their case....Result:Game, set and match to Dawkins.

Enough of this serious non fiction. Next Scarecrow by Michael Connolley

I've just started 'The Brass Verdict' by Michael Connelly; the first one of his I've read.
50 pages in and not sure whether to carry on. It looks like it might be reasonably entertaining, but not very satisfying. I'll probably give it another couple of chapters.

Recently finished 'Downward to the Earth' by Robert Silverberg. I thought it was average SF - most of the reviewers on Amazon liked it a lot better than I did, so I probably missed something.

Same reason I read Sam Harris and The End of Reason: A Muslim's Critical Response by Bill Whitehouse after reading The End of Faith: Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason by Sam Harris. The rebuttal by Whitehouse was weak and often off-target. (Example: at one point, Mr. Whitehouse launched into a multi-page 9-11 conspiracy theory rant. Why?)

Game, set and match to Harris.

Just finished Half Broke Horses (a fictionalized memoir) by Jeannette Walls I enjoyed it a lot! I'd give it a 4 out of 5. It the story of the authors grandmother. It definitely keeps your attention! Recommended.

I keep seeing recommendations for this, I guess I'll have to pick it up. I'm reading the second Lorna Barrett bookshop mystery in a vain attempt to keep my sanity between finals. But after today's Accounting final, there are no classes til January 5th; and my crocheting projects have a Christmas deadline, since they're all gifts, so after Christmas I plan on hibernating on the couch and reading for a solid week!
Oh, and some unsolicited general advice? If you're going to plan on crocheting homemade gifts, start in March, not November.
