What's what I meant when I said before that the Sony perhaps isn't the ideal choice for getting to know ePub, since that's a limitation of the Sony, not of the ePub format.

As the others have said when I convert ebooks in Calibre I prefer to use LRF rather than EPUB as the output format because it looks better on the reader and I have a pet peeve about page numbering. In LRF it will say 800 pages but in EPUB it will say 300 pages(of which there are 2 or 3 sub pages per page).

However I have found that Sony LRX ebooks have the font set too small or the margins too wide(some of the newer ones have a smaller margin). I guess that is not an issue now since they switched to epub now. |

I, too, prefer lrf > lrx > ePub. Epub is last only when it is poorly made. I hate when the font size is enlarged and you end up with big empty space margins and only 3 or 4 words per line. My other gripe is that not all publishers take the time to convert from a good beginning source to get a nice looking ePub. So, not all ePubs look the same or even have the same font size. I always try the ePub first and if I don't like it, I use whatever else is available to try for my 505. I wish I knew how to do my own "tweeking" to get nice looking books. ![]() Some of the nonDRM ePubs look beautiful. Try Zelda's, "Three Men in a Boat" and pdurrant's published "Desbarollda, The Waltzing Mouse" (for purchase, but he will send you HIS ePub version if you have bought the book) My understanding (from reading some posts by Adobe and MR members) is that the rendering of ePub is in transition. So the look of ePub on the Sony is a software problem and will need the update. Supposedly, it will be available to all Companies sometime in 2010. (Some threads that have information on ePub that is useful to know for 505 owners also): The new ePub DRM Why is it good that Sony went epub? Last edited by dreams; 12-18-2009 at 05:24 PM. Okay, here's your first question. The seller said they've owned the 505 for 6 months. How can tell if the firmware has been upgraded to read ePub? I found and downloaded the firmware so I'm ready if I need to do the upgrade myself.

Also, I forgot to ask the seller if she de-registered it before it was shipped. I recall reading that there is a way to de-register and re-register it in my name but I can't find the thread. Do you know how to do it? |

What you do is try to authorize the 505 under your account at the eBookstore and if it works, then you are good to go. Otherwise, give Sony a call at ... Quote:

Select "Settings" from the main menu on the 505. Then select "About". The firmware version number will be listed at the top of this page.
