He says that you can send your PRS-500 to the following address to get the firmware upgrade:

Sony Toronto Factory Service Centre
211 Placer Court
Toronto, ON M2H 3R6
Canada
Telephone: 1-877-899-7669

They will send your PRS-500 back, free of shipping charges.

Since I live in Toronto, he said it was also possible to bring the unit to the centre and have the firmware upgraded while I wait.

Cheers,
HiWire
Well that's good to hear
Maybe they'll let you watch the firmware being applied, that way you could tell us more about how the firmware upgrade is applied..

Hey AprilHare, congrats on your "upgrade" success!

Okay, so as of yesterday morning I received the box that Sony mailed out to me (have not seen it as the building manager has it) I will use it to send my PRS-500 back to Sony for the upgrade. I'm actually going to wait until after the holidays to mail it in, since I actually have time to do some reading during the break When I called Sony Toronto the person who answered my call assured me that the upgrade could still take place in January.

I'm actually really looking forward to the upgrade. I have one more .lrx book that I haven't read (The Road by Cormac McCarthy) but after that I needz my ePub upgrade!!

Okay, I picked up my box. It was shipped on December 10th, and it was received on December 16th. The box has two sheets of foam, which would keep the reader fairly secure. I think waiting for the box may be a good investment - if the reader is damaged en route, not sure if Sony Canada will ship back a PRS-505

The address is:

Sony of Canada Ltd Service
211 Placer St
North York, Ontario
M2H3H9

Good luck everyone!

Wishing you all the best luck with upgrading your PRS-500! I wrapped mine in two layers of bubble wrap, with the slip of foam that came with the PRS-500 to protect the display itself, in a DVD box (fit nice and snugly). Seemed to get my PRS-500 to the US from Australia in good condition

The ebook reader is for public domain books that I would have to pay for in paperback format. But when I have the choice between electronic media or paper for the same price, I'll choose the latter. It's simply a question of appropriate technology. There is only one advantage I can think of in using an ebook reader: compact size. On the other hand, paperbacks are usually cheaper if you get them used, they're more robust, don't need batteries, better resolution and contrast. This reminds me of people who use an electronic organizer instead of a paper agenda. I personally would never trust an electronic gadget with important appointments and telephone numbers, and nothing beats a paper agenda for quickly jotting things down.
