This looks promising. Opens Christmas Day. It's about a thousand-year old who sold his soul to the Devil in return for immortality; the perfect holiday theme. Has anyone heard any buzz?

Up In The Air was excellent. Ditto The Bad Lieutenant but you can definitely give 2012 a pass.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
I've heard mixed reviews in the UK; it's not regarded as one of Terry Gilliams' better films.

Mark Kermode's BBC review is at:

Tom Waits plays the devil in this one. I'm sold

Moon

I really liked Moon. It reminded me quite a lot of Silent Running, which is also a movie I really like. The whole aspect of whether the main character, Sam Bell, was alone and who/what he/they was/were unfurled gradually throughout the movie and kept me riveted to know more. GERTY (the computer) seems quite a control freak at times (reminiscent of HAL in 2001); this somewhat changes as more is revealed. I give it two thumbs up.

I love Silent Running, one of my favourite movies of all time. I just wish they made sci-fi movies like that now, instead of the CGI war things we tend to get. If you liked Silent Running, may I recommend another Douglas Trumbull film, Brainstorm. It's a brilliant 'small' sci-fi movie starring Christopher Walken and Natalie Wood. Here's the trailer:

Thanks for recommending it, Moejoe. I have seen Brainstorm as well already! It is quite trippy how that thing on his head works, nearly killed his son when he tried it on.

Yes, Silent Running is great. Glad you and Sparrow like it too. An environmental sci-fi. Don't you just think the corduroy spacesuits are so 70's? I loved it when he came in carrying apples in his monk-like costume too...kind of hippy. The whole storyline is excellent though. He sure has passion for his garden and protecting it. So many precious little bits in the movie and Joan Baez's songs were great too.

Those little robots, Huey, Dewey, and Louie, made me blub!

P.S. They Shoot Pictures is a useful movie site.

I like how they hustled him at cards by talking to each other and he couldn't understand what they were saying.

All of my favourite sci-fi movies are from the 70's, it's when they actually had topics and ideas instead of just fights and monsters. Silent Running, Rollerball, Soylent Green, Planet of the Apes (okay it was late 60's), Logan's Run...all these films have solid ideas they explore. Moon is the first sci-fi film I've seen in years that also shares this approach. Hope it isn't the last

I think there are serious SF films still being made; K-Pax, The Island, Equilibrium, Gatacca, Frequency, District 9, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Avalon etc.
How about Wall-E? I thought that was a great film (though my nephews hated it) - it had some serious ideas.
I'd also say the Matrix films are thought-provoking.
I watched '9' the other day and that was pretty good.

I liked K-Pax and have previously read all the K-Pax books before seeing it.

I also saw 9 the other day and thought it was quite original. How each number was an aspect of the creators soul was quite interesting. It was different and I rather enjoyed seeing it. They represented all that was left of humanity.
