I can see how accidents happen. Amazon got rid of confirmations and such in favor of one click shopping. I accidentally purchased a Jay-Z album and a Tosh.0 episode. I don't know if I would have bought them but I was checking to see how much I had on my gift card. Not burn it. Amazon annoys me with all this one click shopping. They didn't even let me choose which card to charge.

About turning it off

If you want to be able to buy kindle books from your kindle, I think you have to have it turned on - but if you should accidently buy a book from the kindle via one-click, you have the opportunity to regret before it downloads via wireless. Alternatively you could just buy the books from your computer instead.

Personally, I never use one-click because I like the feeling of security I get when I review the order before it's sent. Not that that always work; I once accidently ordered 2 of each book (p-books) - but the seller was great at changing the amounts immediately

I've found Amazon's customer service people to be extremely helpful. In fact I was surprised at how willing they were to credit me back when I had accidently one-clicked when I meant to get a sample (I've done this two or three times since I got my Kindle). I've always wondered whether people were abusing the system by buying ebooks, keeping them long enough to read them, then returning them. I'm actually happy to learn that Amazon does monitor this and will put a stop to it if it becomes egregious.

As for formatting, I'm pretty forgiving of that and unless the book is missing whole sections, I will just plow through it anyway. Anyway, I sample most everything before I buy it. That has prevented me from buying a few that would have been virtually unreadable due to formatting issues.

Well why would that be a problem? You can read it with whispernet turned off, but to actually BUY USING THE KINDLE, yeah, the kindle and download function would have to be turned on. If you are buying via your computer, your kindle does not have to be turned on unless you select the option to download directly to your kindle (and even if it isn't on, the download can be done later, after the purchase.)

I require a confirmation page where I can check what I'm getting when I buy online. I turned one-button buying off on my Amazon account long ago, and anything requiring it's re-enabling is right out.

Thank you Apparently it needed to said twice
One does NOT have to turn on either one-click or wireless on the kindle in order to buy books - you just can't do it wirelessly.

Yeah, that doesn't appear to float on the TV or MP3 store, or I'm just blind. All the one-click shopping appears to be turned off except for my G1 phone. Yet when i wanted to add a show ba, It just started playing and I got a receipt in my email.

So you just have to disable one of the major selling points of the Kindle just to have a sensible safeguard, right. Oh, and I'd have to dance back and foward disabling it and enabling it every time I wanted to switch between using the website and the Kindle.

...

Yea,the fanboi in this scenario defending the broken way of doing things is perfectly, perfectly clear. There's no reason for eliminating the purchase review screen except to encourage accidental purchases, from my point of view.

Actually I think they originally setup the one click on Kindle to make it easier for people -- less clicking/updating on the Kindle because the Kindle wasn't really setup to be an internet tool with tons of internet navigation. I think they thought they were being clever: "Look how easy it is to use!" Strangely, I think they did it to avoid complaints, not trick people into buying products they don't want. I mean, they *do* accept returns so long as returns don't get out of hand (which was the original discussion point...)

But one-click isn't a big deal. For those that don't like it, it's pretty easy to turn it off, buy a different device like the iPod Touch (more internet surfing ability) or buy books via their computer and upload to the kindle.

And as I've remarked, this is an unusual departure from their previous practice of simply closing the account - it's going to take more than a single example to convince me they've really changed their stripes on this issue.

Also, bluntly, I examine commercial practice from a cynical standpoint and I stand by what I said. If it was an option, you'd have a point, but it isn't and you can't really pretend that having to switch off purchasing on the Kindle if you don't want it is a minor issue in terms of functionality (given, again, on-Kindle purchase is a major sales point!).

Could you please turn the rudeness down? There's no reason to be nasty.

Don't presume I like one-click shopping - I think I already said as much.

I don't like the one-click on the Kindle either and would like a review screen before clicking the purchase button - I can't see why that can't be implemented.

As soon as Amazon start behaving as responsible corporate citizens, certainly. Until then I'll go right on pointing out their behaviour at every turn. Believe me, I don't spare other companies when they behave in this manner either.

It's bluntness - if I see a brick, I call it a brick, and Amazon's absolutely terrible record in corperate governance counts massively against them. If you want rude, ask me my opinion of Ebay. (Or for that matter Wikipedia, the OLPC project or Google)

Some people will see it as nasty, quite simply I believe that allowing this behaviour to pass is no more and no less than condoning it. I'd add right now that Amazon are sending me on average 3 emails a day to one of my Amazon accounts, despite my turning off their emails explicitly in their own control panel and my requesting they close that account multiple times (because they keep emailing me on it!) - every single one is thus generating spam reports (to several places). I won't apologise for that either.
