Amazon knows who bought the Kindle and to which account it's registered (that serial number leaves a trail), so I would say they have proof.

I think it's great that they're paying for the Kindle to be shipped back to Amazon. Even if the owner has to repay the shipping, it's good that Amazon is making the effort to help get the Kindle returned to its owner.

If I were Amazon, I would try to make this into a publicity thing (if the parties agree that is). "A lost Kindle is reunited with the grief-stricken owner" with photos and interviews of everybody involved, all smiles, hugs and tears in their eyes. Then revisit it in a one-year's time.

I agree with you. It seems like no matter what Amazon does someone is going to claim they are bad, evil, controlling, etc.

MS has the same bad rap. Of course, Apple has a halo around them and no matter how much the screw up they always seem to be excused for it.

I think it's great too that they are willing to do this, just think it's a bit weird. I mean it's like Sears insisting you send them the power drill you found left on a construction site.

Each Kindle is registered to an account when it is shipped, so from the serial number they can tell who the registered owner is, the proof is in the design. To a company like Amazon the cost of shipping the Kindle both ways is inconsequential compared the bad press and possible law suits that they could face if they started giving away their customers' personal information. It's not controlling behavior, they are merely living up to their obligations to both parties.

Again, you're not reading or understanding what I'm saying. I'm not saying that the owner's information should be released, but the FINDER is willing to pass his information to the owner. Amazon only needs to do that. End of story. But they want to CONTROL the process, instead of just being helpful.

Thats not the way it should work, or will ever work. Amazon has no idea what this person is going to do with the kindle that they have found. the most appropriate action to to have amazon regain possession of the device, that way they can get it back to the owner themselves, not from some guy no one knows.

What he's doing is fantastic, but If I lost my kindle, I would feel much better about amazon having my kindle and sending it to me, rather then dealing directly with some stranger.

I don't know what your going on about amazon "controlling" everything. If I lost a kindle, I would want amazon to handle it exactly how they are handling it. Your comparison to losing a power tools is ridiculous. We aren't talking about a 15 dollar power tool, we're talking about a $300 electronic device that is probably very dear to someone.

The power drill would mostly likely not be registered with Sears so it would make no sense to send a lost drill to them.

With the Kindle, it is made by Amazon and registered to Amazon, so it makes sense to send it to them for return to the rightful owner.

I understand, butAMAZON is NOT THE OWNER, they just happen to know who it might be. Hell the thing could have been sold or traded or discarded etc.

The other thing that is funny is that there is no information on the info page. Mine had the Kindle name, my assigned kindle email etc. when I received it. Why would that information not be there? Would it be because it was De-Registered and if so would Amazon STILL know who it belonged to.

Sorry if it sound like I'm being pissy about this but despite being a good thing they (Amazon) are doing I still think it's an example of their corporate controlling approach to the ebook/ereader market.

That's a good thing!

Amazon will know who it was last registered to and can take it from there. If the Kindle was sold, the last registered owner should be able to supply the information on the new registered owner (or contact new owner and have them contact Amazon)

Just make sure you never lose your Kindle or ever find a lost one and you won't have to worry about it.

Again, not really. Amazon is doing this to not only cover themselves, but also to ensure the kindle gets back to its rightful owner. I really don't see how amazon could handle this any other way. I would be quote upset if amazon knew someone had my reader and they DIDN'T request to get it back.

Your telling me that if you lost a reader, you would want to deal with some stranger that you have never met, to get it back, rather then amazon itself?

You're right. Losing a wallet is exactly like losing a kindle. How silly of me.

I'm not sure why you hate convenience so much. Amazon is making it EASIER on everyone by handling the return of the Kindle, paying for shipping, not relying on some stranger to do the right thing and return it promptly, etc.

I wish wallet companies did this.
