Troubles in one format only would indicate that your reader is actually in fine health hardware, and battery charge wise. It would seem to indicate a problem with the particular bit of software that reads that format only. Try a different firmware version. Even try downloading firmware from a different manufacturer like BeBook.

First off, Robert, thanks for the offer of assistance from Astak. It is good to see the comments regarding your help on here are certainly accurate.
Secondly, I have had no problems with my EZ reader since I switched to epub. I used calibre to convert them to mobi so maybe that was the issue (although I used it to convert to epub and they work great). Plus, having used both, I prefer epub so no harm done.
Given the fact everything seems to be working fine (and, yes, Robert, it does turn on when I plug it in so my cable is good), I think the device is fine. Likely, the cause was user error
Thanks to everyone for their assistance

My Hanlin V3 had many problems until I replaced the SD-card with a new one. SD-cards cause all kinds of problems in many devices, mainly because the specifications for manufacturing SD-cards are very loose.

Keyboard lock - come back after a time - locked up

So, it seems I am not alone.

I have already moved all my ebook files to the internal storage and removed the SD card (supplied with the unit) to see if the V5 pro is more stable.
I will upgrade to the latest firmware.
I will convert all my .mobi files to .epub.
Maybe I will get stability.

Otherwise relatively happy. Would be deliriously happy but for the above. I was going to buy a unit for a present but I am afraid the v5 pro is not ready for the technically uninformed just yet.

I think the PP is ready. Ok there are some issues with .mobi but Astak are releasing firmware roughly once a month, so bugs are getting sorted. All the technically uninformed need to do to remove all concern is avoid reading .mobi or close the book between readings. It can be a pain at times but I prefer to have these little faults and have them actively fixed than have a device limit me to 2-3 formats (not Nook bashing but it doesn't even support .txt)

Trouble is, I have avoid epub because of the fonts, avoid pdf because it doen't work, now avoid mobi because it locks up. We are running out of popular formats!

Done this . . . time will tell but one plus is that .mobi remembers the font face change now - ie change to ibookn in a .mobi ebook and when start'er up again, still in ibookn

Could always go for the good old reliable .txt format....oh no doesn't offer fonts or formatting. In that case we could use .txt, utilise it with a .xml wrapper in combination with .css, zip the files up and release it as a format we'll call Electronic Publication, referred to a EPUB..............oh wait

Perhaps we're taking the wrong approach with the lock-up with .mobi. Could be a feature as part of the format, you know a health and safety feature, locks up when you've read for too long - makes you stop reading and restart the device and have a short break. Think of it like the Wii and the 4 hour alert that comes up after constant playing

Dear All:

Anybody that is having a problem with the device locking up... please call 1-866-368-8788 or jot an email to: support@astak.com. WHY? Because I am Business Development and they are the techies who solve problems. IF they cannot find the answer they can either exchange or fix your current OR call the factory to get a Firmware Upgrade done to make the problem go away.

Yes, I can monitor and add my two cents... but I am not the boss of the technical help personnel! If you post it others can help if they can. I can try to help. But... if you call or email they have a record and can get things done for sure.

Astak has really good customer service and great support. Take advantage of it! Yes, most locking up is due to low battery charge. BUT... if you know for sure you are on "full" then next step is calling or emailing!

Do not run out of formats... find help!!

AND... a big welcome to EZJim

Dear Perrinjcat:

Keep purring!!

We are very glad that you are here on our little designated Astak forum and we want everyone happy. This should be different than where you buy the device and the company says: "we have your money now go away". At Astak we are constantly trying to bring out better devices. We are not well known yet. We need word of mouth and others seeing that Astak exists. It is important to us that our customers are also our embassadors.

So... I keep trying to ensure your device gets better and better and that new models do not mean we lose sight of the "older" models.

I appreciate that you posted and I am glad you are here!!

Latest firmware did not fix the .mobi issues nor did running from internal memory only (no SD card inserted). There a feeling that lockup may not be as common during page turns while reading a book - hard to quantify - but certainly if the book is left open then when you come back after a long time it will be locked up.

Will move to step two now and check stability.

I was experiencing freezes when I locked my Pocket Pro when reading Mobipocket content. Eventually, I just started turning off unit when I stopped reading. Easier than having to restart all the time.

Since the last firmware update however, I've been trying out the keylock to pause unit and I've been fine. No lockups at all. In fact, my unit hasn't been freezing at all lately.

I wasn't too worried about the problem. Figured the unit was just turning off and leaving whatever was on the screen. Have to say, this is how I thought it was supposed to work, and I really like it.

I didn't notice anything on the new firmware about addressing this issue, but seems to be working great for me so far.
