  • FBReader seems to be a bit upset by the Baen epubs ever since I upgraded! Strange! I try to open them with fbreader (we should have an option to use fbreader as default), but after a little bit of turning sand clock, nothing happens. They do open fine in Adobe Viewer, though! Drawback: Only five font sizes and those irritating page numbers! Please try to get this problem solved asap, dear PB guys (one book fbreader won't open is 1633)!
  • Talking about ameliorations: ADE won't hide the status bar, whereas it can be hidden easily in fbreader!

I'm really excited about this device. I have a couple questions:

1) How many levels of grayscale?

2) What's the max size microSD card it can read? (I bought an 8GB for my phone and discovered it can only see 4! Don't want that to happen.)

Thanks!

Not that it matters a great deal, but I thought most of the eInk displays were now 8 levels grey-scale, not 4? Just curious...

It's 8 interscaled but not native. Practically, it's no big difference!

Yes, a 4 level grayscale generally indicates older hardware components. This isn't necessarily bad, because you don't need the latest microprocessor or display controller to run a basic ebook reader. Also, several vendors (e.g. Amazon and Jinke) have had problems getting anti-aliasing right with 8-16 grayscales EInk screens.

The film can support this, but the original Apollo display controller used in many older designs is 4 gray scale only. The E-book Reader Matrix lists what display controller is being used and the number of hardware gray scales.

I never even contemplated about "shades of gray" before I began getting those questions...as for me, as a reader of ebooks - screens have enough contrast for everyday (long) reading of books and comics

Of course! Sure, you're right. It's just me, trying to jump to more subjective experience, than just dry figures of "shades of gray"...
