I really hate to answer to this thread as I find the first post insulting on several levels, but just to answer neilmarr's and desertgrandma's question, google says SHMBO is She Who Must Be Obeyed.

From "Rumpole of the Bailey" - it's the name he always uses to refer to his wife .

Because the quality degradation on the PRS-600's screen is due to the touch layer on it, and the 900 has the same touch screen as the 600. I've not actually seen one, no, but I'd be willing to wager a large sum of money that it will be exactly the same, quality wise.

Actually, the 900 has the biggest reading area around possibly topping the Amazon Kindle DX since the latter's area is partially filled with a keyboard.
The biggest Sony, certainly. Nowhere near the size of the 10" screen of the iRex DR1000, though.

Quote:
I was considering a BN Nook but part of its screen is filled with a color LCD control panel reducing the reading area.
No. The LCD screen is separate. The "reading screen" of the nook is a standard 6" screen - the same as that used by any other 6" device. The colour LCD screen doesn't reduce the size of it.

Thank you.

I hope those searching for a new device will also look at the many positive posts about the 600 and decide for themselves.

The PRS-600 is my favourite out of the half dozen readers that I own. It's the one that gets used every day.

I agree with that DGMa, but, perhaps more importantly, they should try one and see for themselves.

The OP obviously didn't like it; equally, many people here do. As it appears to be a matter of personal preference, then first hand experience is probably the only way to be sure.

And originally, of course, from the classic fantasy novel "She", by Sir Henry Rider Haggard, which anyone who cares to can download right here at MR .

I like my PRS600 - considering it's a touchscreen I am happy with the quality of the screen.

Maybe the one you tested wasn't ok???

To continue dragging this poor topic way off the tracks, you may also listen to the excellent radio version of it here:

From the radio series Escape. Scroll down to the episode entitled esca.48.07.11_She.mp3.

I recently bought the PRS600 and have found the screen to be very good. That said I tend to use it under relatively bright artificial light conditions.

It seems to me that the contrast of the text is proportional to the external light that the device receives. If you don't give the device enough light, the reflections will overpower the text.

I was on the fence for a long time on this reader, but if I had to do it again, I'd buy it again - heck, I have even used the dictionary on at least two occasions whilst reading The War of the Worlds.

Love the reader. It is just so convienent.

I own a PRS-505 for a year now and last weekend I saw a 600 in a shop. I tried it out for a while and the screen seemed ok for me, so I ordered one.
Sure, if you see the 505's screen next to the 600's, the 505 is better, but the 600 screen is not so bad at all and I can sacrifice a bit of the display quality for the touchscreen and integrated dictionary.
