Sorry if I've come off that way - the liseuse withdrawal was terrible! 19 days 2 hours without my PRS-500 was getting to me!
Got my PRS-500 back to Australia now from EPUB firmware update rejuvination in the US Feel much more conciliatory!
Sony positives:
  • Reliable with excellent long-term support
  • Support for EPUB and Adobe ADEPT, allowing you to buy from a larger array of bookstores. (At least thats the way I perceive it.)
  • Great for borrowing ebooks as a result
  • Not wireless at present, but Daily Edition is wireless (worth ordering if you want that!) Some people prefer wired anyhow.
Negatives
  • Not wireless yet.
  • Amazon are perceived to have a bigger book store than Sony, at lower prices to US residents.
  • Amazon sell a liseuse with a larger display. If you need it, worth considering - but it costs more accordingly.
  • The countries you can buy a Sony liseuse in are more limited. These liseuses can't be used in other non-Sony supported countries to buy ebooks from the Sony Store (which is a real shame).

Obviously a conscious choice has been taken to limit the choice to a "two party" system - Kindle or Sony. Just curious, but perhaps a more telling question could be "why should I get a Kindle or a Sony?" There are many other options, and they may offer you something more/different if you consider them.

I think the person had done their homework and boiled the choices down to these two

You mean Kindles are NOT made out of puppies?

I think this entire "mine is bigger than yours" discsussion that has been sailing up as of late is ridicilous.

As long as you are comfortable with an e-reader and the formats it handles, I'm happy for you.

But if you try to criticise my brand of reader, I will keel you, I will keel you dead!

Hang on... Amazon e-books aren't cheap after all for international users...

Rootkit. Oh yes. That 2005 thing, regarding CDs (don't ask me what that's supposed to do with ebooks, but hey).
It's amazing how Amazon keeps an eye on what you own to make sure they delete it when they think they've made a mistake. What on earth do you think they do with all that information besides?

Best prices? Not for international users. Good luck browsing other sites and for other stores outside the US with your Kindle - headlines like "Crippleware Alert! International Kindle Gets No Web Access Outside U.S." (from Wired) deserve attention..

Sarcasm new to you? Or do you think I'm threatening to sick Amazon onto you? Relax. I guess it mightn't happen again (you never know...)

I think the Kindle as a piece of hardware is fine. It's Amazon that is the subject of my attention. As such it isn't a 'fanboy' thing. You buy a Kindle, you buy into Amazon's baggage; it's a commercial minefield worth avoiding.
Would it give me pleasure if it happened again? No. - Schadenfreude is a sin, so they say.

I am sorry but this is just ridiculous! Regarding cost of international users that surely is up to them (I mean the specific end users, I know you are not form US) and not you to decide? I mean, try buying as an international user from the Sony Store (yeah I know there is a work around for this, but still). For me it is perfectly acceptable to pay a few USD more than US users for a book. After all the dollar is not worth much anymore...(sorry US guys, not meaning to be cocky..).

As for format, again this is a silly argument. Either you go with it or not. I dont see many iPhone users bitching about that "apple knows what I install on my iphone..or that there is only one appStore"

Wow. Cool. Apparently I'm not "most people"!
(Then again, since Amazon has the most books that "most people" would be interested in, and most of the time their pricing is lowest....)

Sorry, what was that? I refer the jury to this: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss?ur...+Brown&x=0&y=0

I'm in Canada which is NOT the US and I get a lot of choice. And yes Whispernet works for me here with no fees as well. Just because Amazon hasn't quite got to a specific country (more likely, hasn't reached a deal with publishers there), is not a reason to say (as some reviews do, not necessarily here) that it is bad, sucks, waste of money etc.

[QUOTE=kindlekitten;689618]this is getting so old and worn out. I wonder if any of you can actually full articulate why Amazon is so "ebil"

I went into business in 1996 at about the same time Amazon went into business. While I was struggling with a few thousand dollars of debt, they were running up millions of dollars of debt. Guess who got the free ride? "Too big to fail" is nothing new.

I'm thinking I was one of the first to hate Amazon.

However, as I was advised earlier to 'let it go' I will admit that the final judgement came down to my preferences in design...
(And yes, I did note the smiley in the 'let it go' response)

I'm not sure what you are getting at. Amazon didn't get a "free ride".

They didn't get a free ride, they got investors that took a long view and backed them. It seems to have paid off, hasn't it?

Are you saying that fact that they lost a lot of money in their infancy makes them evil?
