Who has a Nook?
It took me a few days to notice, but there doesn't seem to be all that many Nook owners here. This is something of a surprise. When the latest Sony Readers were announced, a dozen or so members bought one and posted their opinions.
If you have a Nook, please feel free to start a thread. I want to hear what you think of it. Last edited by Nate the great; 12-11-2009 at 09:33 AM. |

Several people have posted threads, myself included, regarding their Nook impressions. Also, they're just plain difficult to get ahold of.

I've got my nook, it arrived last night. I'm still playing around with it, so I haven't made any posts with my impressions. Also, that seems like something everybody will do, how many voices really need to be out there saying basically the same thing?
There's a good amount of activity at nookboards.com, maybe that's where a lot of the new owners are. |

I suspect you're right. The Nook might have been rushed to market before the supply problems were fixed. This is certainly true of the software.

I read on another forum that B&N had 400,000 ready to ship in the first wave, but exceeded that number greatly. This person claimed to have heard it from a B&N employee (corporate, not retail), but who knows how reliable that is.
Also, there are probably a lot of new nook owners who don't know about MobileRead or aren't inclined to go looking for discussion forums. *shrug* |

Got a nook. At first I just plain loved it. The more I used it, the more I noticed issues. It doesn't seem as slow as others say it is, but it's definitely more sluggish than my Sony Reader Pocket Edition. Turning pages takes the same amount of time though. Wi-Fi has problems connecting sometimes and after a long sleep, 3G sometimes has trouble establishing connection as well. I made a post about purchase problems. The nook seemed to read from a cache and kept displaying a sample of a book rather than the full book. The dictionary is also spotty and refuses to work sometimes.
Like everyone said though, it seems like the issues are all software based and can be corrected. As long as that happens, I won't get rid of it and switch to the Kindle. |

If B&N exceeded 400,000 units in the first wave, believe me, B&N would proudly announce those numbers. Sorry, I have a very difficult time believing they would set an INITIAL manufacturing run that high, much less have them ready to ship. That is an incredible financial outlay, especially for a company's first consumer device.

Got mine the same day I shipped my trusty old Sony PRS-500 out for the free firmware upgrade.
Maybe it's because I'm coming from a really old Sony eBook reader, but the Nook seems fine to me, and I really like it's form factor/size and touch screen interface, the build is quite solid and it feels like a quality/well made product. The touchscreen response can be sluggish at times, yet sometimes it's quite responsive. Had one hard crash this morning, the whole thing reset to factory defaults including losing the handful of ePubs, mp3 and screen saver/wallpaper images that I had loaded. That was strange. I think/hope things will get better with a decent firmware update (which according to the guys at NookDevs.com should be coming this weekend according to one of the BN customer/tech support guys they had spoken with). There are also others who have posted that the "Formatting" delay upon starting to read a book (even upon opening the book after the 1st time) should also be addressed in an update. Fingers crossed. As I said in a previous post, the Sony (and probably the Kindle as well) took a couple of firmware revisions before becoming totally stable/usable. That is the the risk you take adopting a completely new platform nowadays it seems. Not ideal, but I have been able to use the Nook for some reading already and it's really grown on me. Dave |

I have mine sitting next to me all boxed up. Never opened it. It's listed on eBay. Every so often I have to fight the urge to check it out but then I remember how great capitalism can be! I was impressed in the store though when I checked it out. Much more than I thought I would based on the reviews I read.

I would suggest people stay away from the nook until these serious crashes are fixed. As of now, my assessment that Sony Reader's are overall the most stable (for devices with ADE) still stands. |

I'd have to agree that alot about the Nook feels quite beta and rushed out.
Guess I'm OK with that personally as I consider that to be part of the cost of being on the bleeding edge, especially when jumping on a brand new platform. Still, I was impressed at how easy it was to load and open (successfully) ePubs from a completely different book store than BN's own (ePub versions of books that I had previously bought from Sony's store in their proprietary .lrx format) and I think the Nook hardware is really slick and the platform holds great promise. Time will tell if firmware updates fix all our issues, I certainly hope it does and soon. The crash was annoying but since I hadn't loaded much into my Nook up to that point, recovering was trivial. Will keep an eye out for any more crashes. Used it for a good 3 hours of reading and some browsing around their store for 30 minutes, no problems. The color screen interface could be snappier, but it isn't too bad, IMHO not as bad as many have made it sound. I was able to get fully engrossed in my book and read w/o distraction just using the hardware buttons (where you'll be spending most of your time as a user). It doesn't feel any slower than the PRS-500 or my friend's first generation Kindle. Then again, I'm coming from a rather old Sony PRS-500 so my expectations may be lower than those who have used some of the newer devices (newer Sony models and the Kindle 2). I'll hang in there for now. We'll see how the firmware updates change things. Dave |

One thing I've noticed is that whenever a new ebook reader is released, MR sees a jump in membership. A certain percentage of those who just bought the device will find MobileRead through Google. My rule of thumb is that the percentage is similar for all the devices. This would mean that we are seeing fewer Nook owners than expected because not very many devices were shipped. |

I wonder, Nate, if they're just not sticking with the BN forums and support pages, like the K owners did with the Kindle forums at Amazon at first?

Got mine on the 9th. I originally purchased a Sony Touch Edition a week before the nook was announced, and I was really unhappy with the glare on the screen. When the nook was announced, I immediately sold my Touch to a co-worker and put in the pre-order. The screen looks amazing compared to the Touch, and the issues it has currently I'm fairly confident will be addressed (by someone, anyway, go android!) so I'm glad I made the choice I did. I think of all the ereaders out there now, the nook has the most potential.
