Cool-er 3G ebook reader announced by Interread

In selecting providers, we have actively sought those who share our vision and commitment to an ideal reader experience, and we're thrilled to team with AT&T to deliver content over the nation's fastest 3G network."

They will also be working with NewpapersDirect to deliver over 1,000 publications wirelessly on the device due to release "sometime" in 2010.

Yes, 2010 is shaping up to be the year of the eBook.

Let's hope that Interead will invest some time and money in a good firmware this time around. The device can be seen already on Netronixinc.com (EB600 Cookie/Grace/Swiftie )!

It will also be sold by other Netronix revendors! Pocketbook, for instance, has already announced that the device will be demoed at the CES in January!

AFAIK PocketBook's device will be a custom design and won't be available to other licensors (same as with PB360). There was even some talk about producing their new devices in Ukraine and not Taiwan.

Yes it will be customized, of course! But it is still done in China! I guess Interead will customize the model a bit, too, just as it was done with the Cool-er. I was only talking about the general specifications, of course!

Talking about PocketBook? Actually, it seems like they will be going to do two: The 901 (without connectivity and touchscreen) and the 902 (with both)!

A difference between Interread and PocketBook (or Bookeen) is that they seem to be using the standard Netronix firmware. Jinke has demonstrated that this approach can work well world-wide (Hanlin V3 and V5), and Netronix adds to the equation customized cases for standard electronics. As you suggest, the trick is to put enough support behind the firmware no matter who develops and maintains it.

Since Netronix hardware goes with both vendor-specific and generic firmware, it can be hard to keep track and a vendor can always switch. To take another example, the BeBook 1 and Mini are Hanlins, but I was never sure where the BeBook 2 was coming from.

While I'm happy to see more eBook readers taking advantage of 3G technology, I'm pretty irritated that AT&T is the one providing it to all comers, when they can't even handle the traffic they have now with the iPhone.

If that's a serious question, it's the word used in the UK for the 100 units that a Pound is divided into. Eg "10p" would be pronounced either "ten pee" or "ten pence" (the first is a little more "informal").

a pence is a penny. 10p is a dime. a dollar is about 62 pence

I was kidding... but thanks. As I learned in _The Pillars of the Earth_ a farthing is 1/4 pence. But in that book they say that pennies are sliver. Are pennies silver in England (UK)?

Yes, although a farthing is 1/4 of a pre-decimal penny (240 old pennies to the pound sterling).
