I'll bet that there will be major improvements in the speed, etc.

Mind you, they rush these things to market as time is the killer. Better to get it out as beta and take the lumps. A lot of pressure on the SW dept now to fix this mess.

Of course there may be hardware issues also but, but I would guess that's a lower % of the overall issues.

I suspect you're right. The fact that page turns using the buttons are faster than page turns using the touch screen (at least on the unit that I played with) is an indication that the touchscreen handler needs optimizing. Considering the maturity of touchscreen technology, it's not likely to be a hardware issue--not impossible, mind you, just not likely.

If the battery is user replaceable, you could always take an extra battery to swap out. I have to do that with my Axim for long car trips since it has fairly poor battery life.

As far as the update last night, I stopped by a B&N today to try out a demo unit again, and the update (IMO) made a big difference in terms of the responsiveness of the unit. A definite improvement, and if B&N is going to keep up with these updates, their customers will be very happy.
You're saying there was a firmware update Tuesday? I don't believe there has been a firmware update yet. My nook still gives a version 1.0.0 for the firmware.

I recall that my trusty old Sony PRS-500 went through a couple of software updates initially before become more reliable (it used to freeze up with certain documents, actually still does from time to time), and while PDF rendering got a LITTLE better, it never worked well enough to rely on (unless you formatted PDF's especially for the Sony's screen dimension).

We'll see how this current factory firmware update fares in terms of PDF reflow capabilities. Kudos for Sony for standing by what is essentially a "End of Life'd" product and doing this one last firmware upgrade for free.

I'm sure it also took a couple of software/firmware updates to get the Kindle running reliably too.

BN is not the only company that shipped something with less than 100% perfect software...

I saw multiple people state that they had an update on Monday evening. (I don't have a nook in my possession, so I can't state anything definitively.) My own experiences in testing out the device in-store both on Monday and then on Tuesday showed a significant improvement in the performance on Tuesday.

You can see some imfo about this over on nookboards.

Really dumb question from a non-techno geek who has never used an e-reader before (my nook will hopefully arrive today)...

Some have mentioned a recent firmware update that happened earlier this week. Do such updates automatically just arrive on one's nook? Is there something the user has to do in order to update to the most recent firmware or software?

no, you should not have to do anything. Since the nook is 3g enabled, if you are in coverage area or on a wifi network it should be "pushed" to your nook when it comes out.

There was no firmware upgrade yet. Widely misleading. Everyone's software, including those that think they had an upgrade still have 1.0 software.
