Well I can deinstall the current version of Adobe Reader and go back into my application backup CDs and I'm sure I'll have a 6 or 7 on one of those CDs. Then what?

You can't do that either, as the activation data no longer exists (as of April).

So... basically... I paid $30 for two books years ago that, thanks to a change in policy at Adobe, I will never be able to read again and they don't offer a service to convert the DRM from one format to another?

The timeline is posted here, with the only additional bit being that the first time you had the chance to migrate from ACS3 to ACS4 style DRM was July 2008 when ADE 1.5 shipped.

So yes, since you did not take advantage of the ability to migrate in the past year and half, and did not activate an instance of Acrobat or Reader so that you could read your books, you are unable to migrate the content now, leaving your only recourse at this point to be to talk to the seller that you paid the $30 to.

You have to talk to your ebook seller or to Adobe how to migrate. If it doesn't work the ebook seller will probably give you the downloads in ADE again (if you proof you've bought it).

Don't be such a pussy - in the last 8 years I have invested over 2.000 Euro in e-books and my book sellers had no problems with providing me with a new copy of my ebooks.

Anyway, with the ADE format you have a lot of more options (not mentioned in a deeper sense in that posting).

Which is all very well and good IF you were paying attention to Adobe's timelines, which I wasn't lol

I'd never even heard of or used ADE until I bought a new eBook reader.

Don't you have the emails from the purchase? I have all my emails on a gmail account and can search for every bill I got electronically.

You can also search for the bookname and see if it rings a bell.

When is the last time you actually opened these books?

IMHO: That actually doesn't matter - he has the right to upgrade but he needs to proof it somehow. I would call the online shop where he bought it.

LOL

Bought them in 2004 when I bought my Mac. I found them on a backup DVD the other day. I didn't buy them from a book shop, I bought them from regular site. Yeah, I will definitely google it when I get home. I forgot the other day.

Hey, if you buy a book and put it in the attic and forget about it for a few years and then go back into the attic and bring it down and find someone's padlocked it and now you can't read it, would you be pleased?

The pros and cons of ebooks are known. Try to read a Lotus 123 file in todays time.

The best option is to have ebooks in an open format like epub or described pdf.

By the way, if your attic catches fire your paperback book is gone.

Your ebook can be downloaded again.

My email address, which I've had for 8 years and always used, isn't in the website's database, so that's that thought screwed.

I received a Pocket Pro for Christmas but have been lurking on this site for some time trying to get some tips and see which device is the best to buy. Anyway, from what I can see the whole ebook community is one great big mess...too many formats and too much DRM. Anyway I have Acrobat Pro 6.0 and would be happy to try to open those files for you then save them and email them back to you. From what I gather, ebook files are not big and could be easily emailed. Not sure if I would need Reader 6 to open them or whether the full version will open your files and then save them. Maybe Jim knows.

So it could be an even older pdf drm version (Adobe Acrobat 5) where there is another file to the pdf (where the vouchers are saved).

If you have these format and the additional file (same name, different extension only some kbytes big) you can decrypt it with the

Advanced eBook Processor

from Elcomsoft (you can't find it directly on the homepage - Adobe sued them for that).
