sorry for the soap opera

That is some super bad crap, and I feel horrible for you and your family. Once more, let's hear it for Insurance Companies. They're there as long as you don't need them. Too bad the folks at the company in charge of making those decisions won't be joining your former contractor in his new home.

Dishonest Insurance Companies.

Crooked contractors.

(I hope that helps a little bit.)

However, I don't think I could have done more than I did - thus why I stopped taking it seriously myself, even though I would have liked to discuss the subject further. I hope that people will remember to respect the seriousness tag when someone else uses it another time - however funny the subject might appear to themselves. There's always the possibility to start a silly 'sister-thread'.

I think it might help if Serious threads had a different colour background - I kept forgetting this was one.

That it could have been worse, still doesn't make it any better Your huge derail was way after I'd given up on the discussion. Dont' feel sorry.

That's the problem with having them in the Lounge... There's a certain tone here that just doens't work well with serious discusssion. I think this thread is a stellar example of that. However, I can hear an echo of myself from some time ago now, and I'll just step qiuetly away from the thread now.

well the conservatory just didn't work, and I'm not sure why. there's a lot of times I'd like to bring news articles in here (non literary related) and get some discussion going, and I've posted a few... well mostly humourous stuff. but it goes flat.

it's a tough sale. and insisting that folks stay serious just gets resentment going for some. even in the "News and Commentary" we already have which, is supposed to be serious, people start bouncing all over the place

I figured we had gotten as much serious discussion as was going to happen. Everyone who joined the thread, began with a serious answer to the topic. Those who were still hanging around had already said their say. Don't most topics have a brief life time, before the topic is talked out?

No, any topic will go off topic. Some faster than others, on some fora faster than on others... What badgoodDeb is true, at some point everybody has said his or her say and then? You could close threads at that point, or you could see what happens.

Personally, I find it a healthy sign of a forum if a thread starts serious and ends silly. It means that people can still laugh, even over serious stuff...

and it wasn't even the contractor I wanted. the real irony is that I have spent the majority of my adult life in the industry on the telecommunications end. I know what's right and wrong on jobs, and when people are screwing up. I told the spousal unit (whose main contribution was waving money around in the air), and his response was; "my money my way". this is a sure fire way for a marriage to end up in the toilet

Double Ouch, then. Money issues are providing the final nails in the coffin in my marriage too.
