not only out of business, in prison. we spent a year without a roof, had a big blue tarp over the house. the water damage was so bad there is now black mold throughout the house. the only option now is to raze it and start over. the insurance company cancelled the policy stating that as the contractor did it, his insurance should cover it which they won't. so I am left with 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a kitchen on a 6000 sq ft. 10 room house and I'm pretty much out of options

So are you still unable to get insurance on it? I assume you at least have a roof now? Quote:

it is completely a nightmare. there are no insurance options at all. originally I was told there was supposed to be some crime victim's assistance but that hasn't come through. unfortunately tool kits aren't an option because of the mold. it just has to go away. I'm out of resources and ideas.

I've contacted all of the government agencies that I can think of and have gotten absolutely no help at all. when it was obvious that things were going sour with the contractor I called the Sheriff's department and the DA. at the time I was told it was a civil matter and there was nothing they could do. it turns out that we were the first of about 20 for this guy to screw over. I told both agencies what was going on and that it would continue to happen and they still didn't act. lawsuits started to stack up against him and he went to Alaska and worked on fishing boats. then I tracked him to Oregon where he got back into the construction business again. I alerted authorities down there and he was stopped doing anything there. he finally ended up back here in Washington and in jail. he had no assets. when he first fled I found his apartment that he just walked out of and there was nothing of value there. there was a news story on it when I was fighting so hard. I'll see if I can find it.
I was completely rattled when this first happened. probably even went a little nuts. I guess I have a fairly strong survivor instinct so I didn't just give in. I keep hoping that somewhere, somehow there is some justice and I'll emerge from this fiasco |

Maybe you can sue your insurance company for breach--I know people were doing that in Florida when insurance companies tried to walk away for one reason or another (some of which was shoddy workmanship with the last of the buildout--or incomplete buildouts.) Seems to me that they agreed to insure it as did the contractor's insurance--sue them both. Sorry to hear about this. |

I haven't any resources left to attempt that. getting a roof back on the house (before I knew about the mold issue) and going after the contractor ate up what little I had left. my former best friend was a mortgage broker and got us into one of those damned balloon mortgages for the remodel. we didn't need that kind of financing. we had just paid off the house and took out the loan for a remodel. she should have gotten us a remodel laon, very different from a standard one, and she flat out lied and manipulated the loan packet so we ended up with that balloon. bankruptcy was the only way to hang on. this was at the beginning of the mortgage crisis so the other options were not available at the time.
sorry for the soap opera |

Here ya go!
And my apologies for being silly in this serious thread Ea. As a consolation I present my wardrobe of avatars; not as impressive as Zelda's or Pshrynk's. The second image in was my original avatar - a wet dog, with ears flying. "Dogeared" being the connection to reading, although I would never desecrate a book in such a manner.
