Hungarian sounds so nice and fresh to me. Very nice, melodic piece, this one.

I have no idea who invented sampling, but the early avant-garde musicians who experimented in electronic music were certainly among the first, if not the first, to employ it. Check out some of the recordings by Edgard Varèse and you'll see what I mean.

Poeme Electronique by Edgard Varèse (1883 – 1965).
This was written for one of the exibitions at the 1958 World’s Fair in Brussels.

Conlon Nancarrow wrote a lot of music by punching holes in piano rolls. Much of it is beyond the ability of human pianists.

Fortunately, being a toon duck makes Daffy Duck basically indestructible. No matter how much damage he takes, he always comes back for more.

Of course, for sad songs we must return to one of the masters: Barry Manilow! Barry got a nod for the song "Mandy" in the book "I Hate Myself And Want To Die: The 52 Most Depressing Songs You've Ever Heard" by Tom Reynolds (a very funny book).

That brings this to mind: What if Barry Manilow performed the song "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" with Celine Dion?

Keeping with the piano theme, here's a sample of one of the pieces for prepared piano by John Cage:

Interesting stuff, but I don't want this guy anywhere near my piano!

Was Alone Again (Naturally) in the book? That Gilbert O'Sullivan ballad has to be one of the saddest songs I've ever heard.

That's a bit too new to be "an Avalon song", but it's certainly "the Avalon song". Like LRB, it brings back memories...just a little bit later though. I'm thinking maybe still in the Kingswood, but probably in different circumstances, and with a dog, a cat, a goldfish & a budgie.

Ahh, memories... word them right, and they sound a lot more interesting than their mundane reality.

Okay... a song...right...one I'm listening to right now...okay...so, it has to be in my "library"...right...okay...how about the equal-ultimate Avalon song (but not the other, because I don't have any ELO):
