When you start to redicule people for using your language to accommodate you: in writing you should pay attention to your interpunction.

"I agree; the Dune trilogy should have stopped there."
(IMHO "there" iz a lokation hand schould not be used in this specifik zentence bud u should use "then")

It's sometimes rendered in writing as "of" to indicate dialect, too. I just assumed DF was adopting a deliberately informal and conversational tone.

Let's just say that Sturgeon's Law applies to just about everything including most book series and forum threads...

I personally think that:

Frederick Pohl should not have written any sequels to Gateway (which was great imho).

Clarke, no sequels to 2001 or the first Rama book.

I'm reading The Great Gatsby right now and at least one character keeps speaking that way. It's driving me crazy. I'm not sure how I feel about it. In an informal situation like this, I don't care--I've probably made similar mistakes myself. But when I see it written incorrectly in a published format, it completely distracts me. Isn't the pronunciation of "should of" indistinguishable enough from "should've" that it should always be spelled in the latter, correct form?

Another contribution to this thread: there are at least a few sequels out there for The Time Machine. I haven't read any, and I know none of them are by H.G. Wells, but does anybody here have some thoughts on those? While some have looked interesting to me, others have looked like easy pickings for criticism.

Mostly I lurk (obvious from the number of my posts), but I've loved this thread.

I'm closing in on 63 and grew up with Heinlein and loved (love) his early novels. Read Stranger In a Strange Land and had to struggle through it.

And thanks to the discussions, I'm rereading Starship Troopers and enjoying immensely.

Cool What if The Foundation Were real?

Dear Folks,

What if something like Asimov's Foundation actually existed? Would you find that interesting? Would you join it like Gaal Dornick, and get involved? Find out more here.

Well, the Foundation series was based on the concept of Psychohistory, using highly sophisticated mathematics to predict future trends and occurrences. And Asimov took some cues from Spengler's theories of cyclic history.

I fear "Hidden histories" based on Vedic teachings fall rather squarely into the realm of fantasy, not SF.

Is it fantasy that the Council of Nicea replaced Jesus' original Esoteric Teaching with the salvationist doctrines of Paul of Tarsus? Is is fantasy that Siddhartha 'Buddha' replaced the original Buddha's Esoteric Teaching with atheistic nihilism? Is it fantasy that the British picked the atheistic Śaṅkara sect to oversee (and destroy) the original Esoteric Teaching of the Vedas in India during their rule? Learn to use Google before you jump to conclusions, man. You are yourself under the influence of a fantasy called scientism.

I must bring back Ender’s Game that was mentioned earlier. There should of been (sorry could not help it) more books. Honestly, Ender’s Game is one of my ATF. The said, reality is that Card is inept when it comes to continuing a series. The Homecoming series was the same way. Each book is progressively worse but still good up until the last one. For some reason Card feels that the last book in a series must be HORRIBLE and sets out to make it that way. I had to chime in as this is likely the largest disappointment I have ever experienced in reading.

As a side note, my spell checker automatically replaced should of with should have when I typed it. I found that somewhat funny.

I can cover this one.

Yes, it is fantasy. Since we have manuscripts pre-dating Nicea that contain Jesus teaching about salvation.
