There was a site I used to play poker on where one guy's name was "Farter". Someone asked why he chose that name, and he said that his daughter had signed him up and misspelled "Father".

I think like everybody I form some impressions / views of people by their choice of avatar. The most difficult is gender, followed by age group.

I'd love to hear opinions given my current one (2 ducks) and u/name - shiny karma to anybody who gets close. !!

My username is based on my favourite character from my favourite book (Pie 'Oh' Pah from Clive Barker's Imajica). I think that with this thread in mind, 'hiding behind a face' is quite ironic since the character 'Pie 'Oh' Pah' could change it's face (kind of like a shapeshifter)...

I am just hoping that we won't see any more avatars of beings sporting silly red Christmasy hat things on their heads. Though that might be seasonally appropriate, it would not be at all a useful reflection of the poster's true self. Ergo, it would be silly and therefore quite inappropriate.

I'm guessing "A Nonny Mouse" means sleeping mouse? So Italian heritage? I'd say female gender and early 30s? Those ducks are really funny BTW.

I made the same mistake when I first signed up with Mobleread. I had no idea whether I'd be back or not and wasn't clear if membership was required. I was in a hurry and all the names I tried were taken or, repeatedly, they were too short: at that time Mobileread required 6 character long names. I kept hitting that barrier over and over until, in frustration, I decided I'd give them what they wanted and move on. Now I'm stuck with it.

I was surprised how hard it was when my dog died last summer. I eventually found another. My avatar shows him the day he came home. At eight weeks and two days the little fellow looks confused. I was too. My first dog was four years old when I got him from the rescue people. Kobe is my first experience with a puppy. I'm keeping him regardless what anyone thinks of me. Don't mean for that to sound hostile, but I'm keeping the avatar for the same silly reason.

A Nonny Mouse = Anonymous

Despite your avatar, I don't think you're a chick; I reckon you're male, with a GSOH.

aw, binky, i like the name "sparrow". i've been using my pseudo in various permutations since i was about 15 or so, and it has some meaning for me : zelda is for the wife of the writer F. Scott Fitzgerald (one of my favourites). i added "pinwheel" because although when i first started using it, the name "zelda" was so uncommon as to be almost unique, that accursed video game soon changed that, and now there are millions of zeldas, taking up my pseudo before i get there. (bastiches ! ) and also i just happen to like pinwheels.

i'm not sure what to say about my avatars, since most of them are made by other people, so i suppose at the most they might express how other people perceive my image (currently i am perceived as a troupe of dancing mice, apparently).

i think i do tend to be more or less (un)consciously influenced by choices of avatar, but i don't consider them the equivalent of a person's face, more the equivalent of their clothing ; it still reflects their taste and the image they want to project but it's not immutable (i admit do get confused sometimes when there are several people using the same avatar though). i love it when people have funny or surprising or beautiful avatars. i don't usually guess gender from avatars though and not necessarily even from a pseudo. i've several times discovered that someone i thought was a woman was in fact a man, or the inverse.

the first time i saw your pseudo i thought it was a clever way to avoid giving your identity (anonymous). and i think your avatar is hilarious. i would guess same as the previous poster : 30's, woman. but i am not at all sure of myself ; it really is a guess (and i think that when in doubt i tend to suppose people are women, in general).

that's actually pretty funny ; i have a new appreciation for your avatar now (i hadn't understood what it meant before).

very interesting thread !
