You're right! Thanks for the pointer. There's quite a rollicking good story going. A bit fragmented, idea-wise ..... but who really needs logic?

Currently rejoicing that I managed to *aquire* (nudge-nudge, wink-wink) some Damon Runyon in e-format at last. I will soon be reading "Dancing Dan's Christmas" for the first time on my 505

Here's the opening:

Quote:
Now one time it comes on Christmas, and in fact it is the evening before Christmas, and I am in Good Time Charley Bernstein's little speakeasy in West Forty-seventh Street, wishing Charley a Merry Christmas and having a few hot Tom and Jerrys with him.
This hot Tom and Jerry is an old-time drink that is once used by one and all in this country to celebrate Christmas with, and in fact it is once so popular that many people think Christmas is invented only to furnish an excuse for hot Tom and Jerry, although of course this is by no means true.

So.... in light of my recent post about meatless meals, I attempted a tofu curry today! I was all excited, and ready to go!

First of all, I am seriously unable to follow a recipe. I start off with good intentions and then I randomly grab things off the shelf and throw them in too (and maybe substitute random things because my pantry never has the things I need). I just go crazy! And forget about amounts! I just put in whatever feels right. I think perhaps I am a born chef who just doesnʻt make very good food

In any case, the food looked great, smelled awesome and tasted.... blah. it was not very good at all. We had no ginger, so that was lacking, it was a really easy and not very exciting recipe in the first place, and I realized that I forgot to add water, and I think I simmered it too high and reduced the coconut milk to almost nothing.

In other words, I was really disappointed. I had such high hopes *sigh*

THIS IS A COPY OF A GENUINE LETTER SENT TO DAVID MILLIBAND.....................

Rt Hon David Miliband MP
Secretary of State.
Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA),
Nobel House
17 Smith Square
London
SW1P 3JR

Dear Secretary of State,

My friend, who is in farming at the moment, recently received a cheque for £3,000 from the Rural Payments Agency for not rearing pigs.. I would now like to join the "not rearing pigs" business.

In your opinion, what is the best kind of farm not to rear pigs on, and which is the best breed of pigs not to rear? I want to be sure I approach this endeavour in keeping with all government policies, as dictated by the EU under the Common Agricultural Policy.

I would prefer not to rear bacon pigs, but if this is not the type you want not rearing, I will just as gladly not rear porkers. Are there any advantages in not rearing rare breeds such as Saddlebacks or Gloucester Old Spots, or are there too many people already not rearing these?

As I see it, the hardest part of this programme will be keeping an accurate record of how many pigs I haven't reared. Are there any Government or Local Authority courses on this?

My friend is very satisfied with this business. He has been rearing pigs for forty years or so, and the best he ever made on them was £1,422 in 1968. That is - until this year, when he received a cheque for not rearing any.

If I get £3,000 for not rearing 50 pigs, will I get £6,000 for not rearing 100? I plan to operate on a small scale at first, holding myself down to about 4,000 pigs not raised, which will mean about £240,000 for the first year. As I become more expert in not rearing pigs, I plan to be more ambitious, perhaps increasing to, say, 40,000 pigs not reared in my second year, for which I should expect about £2.4 million from your department. Incidentally, I wonder if I would be eligible to receive tradable carbon credits for all these pigs not producing harmful and polluting methane gases?

Another point: These pigs that I plan not to rear will not eat 2,000 tonnes of cereals. I understand that you also pay farmers for not growing crops. Will I qualify for payments for not growing cereals to not feed the pigs I don't rear?

I am also considering the "not milking cows" business, so please send any information you have on that too. Please could you also include the current Defra advice on set aside fields? Can this be done on an e-commerce basis with virtual fields (of which I seem to have several thousand hectares)?

In view of the above you will realise that I will be totally unemployed, and will therefore qualify for unemployment benefits. I shall of course be voting for your party at the next general election.

Yours faithfully,

aw ! well don't give up, take it as a learning experience ! as for your methods, that's how i cook too, and maybe it takes a bit of practice but i've found you can get some very good results that way. (just don't forget the ginger and the water next time ).

one of the biggest gifts you can give yourself is a really well decked out spice cabinet. the second time around in Germany we ended up having to "sponsor" quite a few young officer's families coming into country. that usually meant that they lived with you days, weeks, in one situation, months. anyway most of those young wives were fresh out of college and really challenged in the kitchen. I had many of them at my elbow the entire time they lived with us. as I told them, get some spices and then get comfortable with them. then, keep in mind (start cooking this way for awhile) that cooking is a chemistry exercise. the recipes are that way for a reason, these are tried and true techniques of blending various flavors and textures together to achieve a predictable and palatable end result!

I totally agree with this. you can never go wrong as long as you have a well filled spice rack. Wife is constantly whining about me buying new spices everytime we go shopping. But somehow she never complains when I put my dishes on the table
