We say 'football', Americans say 'soccer' - like your Avatar has it.

I'm really curious to find out if you know where the word 'soccer' comes from - without Googling it .

No idea! Iʻm in need of some edification!

I did, of course, know that, on the other side of the pond, the term "football" is erroneously used to describe soccer (as there is something else called football- a dumb sport involving the skin of a pig and big brutish guys running into each other).

Whereas in America 'football' is a game where the ball is thrown.

for replying anyhoo.

We also have 'rugby football' (what you referred to in your post) - what we call football is governed by the Football Association. 'Soccer' derived from 'Association' and was used here to distinguish 'association football' from 'rugby football'.

football = a sport where you use your foot on the ball.
rugby = a sport where you use any part of your body to get the ball to the other side.
American football = a sport for weaklings, it stops every 5 seconds and they only kick the ball about once every 15 minutes...

...and, at least here, "rugby" can be broken down into "rugby league" and "rugby union" (and both are dramatically distinct from "Australian Rules Football").

Here those who don't follow soccer tend to call it "soccer", while those who do call it "football".

Personally, I prefer the unprotected, concussive, collisional brutality of rugby (of either sort). It reminds me of wrestling Adrian for control of...well, anything...but there's less blood, bruising and bone-breakage.

Cheers,
Marc

Well, I never really watch sport, but my husband was watching some rugby games on BBC the other day. I watched Scotland win again Australia? Ireland? forgot which one... But it was fun to watch, especially those last 5 minutes!

I'm not big into sports, and rarely watch any on the telly. I'd never been to a game until a few years ago, when I went to a rugby league game on the Saturday, and an Aussie Rules game on the Sunday. I'd not go to an Aussie Rules game again, but I did go to another rugby game, and I'd go to one again, even if I'd not go out of my way to go to one. It was a pretty massive experience, each time, and very physically impressive.

I still don't watch it on the telly though.

Cheers,
Marc

i don't watch sports live or on the telly (in fact, when the world cup happened in paris, they installed giant screens outdoors in several areas around the city so that anyone could watch ; we happened to be passing by one during the evening of the final and stopped a few minutes to watch, and i missed seeing the first goal (by the french) because i was watching the crowd instead of the screen) but i have to say that the crowds you see in bars on the night of a match can be pretty impressive. and it's hilarious when they all start singing.

The abbreviation for Association is Assoc. - pronounced 'a sock' which then gave rise to soccer.

"a sock" ? although i share this deep appreciation for socks, obviously, and fully agree they should be lauded publicly, i don't understand why the abbreviation for "association" wouldn't be "assos" (like it is in french...). unless you are pronouncing it "asockiation" ?

edit : i mean, the abbreviation would be PRONOUNCED assos ; obviously it would be spelled assoc.

We enjoy pronouncing assoc. with a hard C - it's fun and expresses our inherent joie de vivre.
