Maybe I was a bit "fuzzy" in that explanation. Nothing happened to the guy. Everything worked when he left the place the last time. This symptom developed a couple of days later. All of a sudden, everything on that side of the house would go black and the Residual Current Device on that strip of power would kick in.

Last friday however, it got to the point where we couldnt leave the circuit breakers for the heatr on without the RCD going off.

So the cable must have "shaken loose" some more and was constantly touching the metal frame and thus not possible to turn it back on.

When the guy came out around 2 in the afternoon, he removed the metal "lid" that the cable touched, and everything worked just peachy. It wasn't until he looked on the inside of the lid itself and spotted the "spark-marks" on the metal till he figured out what was happening.

So noone got electrocuted in the process

ha! about 2 weeks ago my cooktop went zzzZZZZZBAPPOP!!!! when I went to turn it on. when I opened it up to see if I could do anything before calling in a repair tech (it is one of those flat glass burner tops), there was a screwdriver sitting just to the side of the wiring for the knobs. it had an obvious arc in it. I've had this cooktop for over 10 years. it has survived my kids, exchange students, dogs charging through the kitchen, marauding cats, at least one horse being led through, a few earthquakes (one in the almost 7 range). who knows what it took to jar this just enough at this point in time to make that screwdriver cause an arc finally? anyway, the wiring was fine, I just had to buy two new knobs and replace them. there was much holding of breath when I flipped the breakers back on!

yep. all of the controls were in the lower middle of the cooktop. it was sitting to the left of the leftmost controls. there was a knick out of the tip of the screwdriver closest to where the obvious shorting was. I figure the arcing took it out

One of my controls went ka-pooie on my ol' stove. I didn't bother getting it fixed (yet or ever -- it's pretty old should be replaced but still works) but did switch the control/burner assignment so the "big" burner would work.

this had to get done. when I tried any of the other knobs there was more activity. it was obviously a big bad waiting to happen

I hope they do - it has to be cheaper than a new boiler!

Farking morons!
Hope they're repairing it for free, or reimbursing you if you've paid.

The cause of our boiler breaking down the first time was a bad installation. No idea why it took several years for it to have an effect...

I am very pleased the builders took a belt-and-braces approach to these houses - at least I have hot water still, and warmth can be provided by layers and/or cuddling etc... (actually, I'd sooner cuddle the yeti than etc, but when it's cold I'll cuddle whatever's to hand...)
