theory?
hypothesis? mmm .... i could never work out which was correct .... Global Warming is unlikely to be confirmed one way or another until some time in the future. If it is phoney we may never know it!, but if it is true then the consequences will be more than we currently observe; although proving man's direct influence may never be certain. Once Nature loses control of her feedback mechanisms, such as permafrost locking methane in store, then what man in his wisdom has done may be the least of our worries. |

Actually quite easy.
![]() A hypothesis becomes a theory once it is scientifically verified and replicated. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_method |

It's quite mind-boggling to me how virtually any discussion of science topics (e.g. global warming, evolution, stem cell research, flu, etc) these days seems to turn into some kind of attack on science itself by those who really have no clue what science, the scientific method, or the history of science is composed of. It's actually quite scary that the thing that has created civilization as it is is so often under attack.

"Dendrochronologists have since used Douglass’s technique to make master sequences for several parts of the country. Most reflect regional growth patterns for distinct species. Much of this work focused on regions in the arid Southwest where ancient pinyon pines still live or exist as beams in old houses. In some places there, master sequences extend as far back as 8,700 years." The seasons and temperatures etc are also mirrored and confirmed in glaciers and ice caps which also deposit in layers that can be matched and tied to tree-ring growth. |

Do you have a citation to support that? And what of the confirmation in the ice layers and sediments in the ocean? |

As far as 159 years. What you are saying may or may not be scientifically confirmed but it must be taken in the entire context of climate history. |

Jeeze Icarusbop, see what you started now.
![]() Current poll results show 46% saying it's happening and it's our fault another 20% say it's happening (but not our fault) So with 66% in agreement that global warming is happening, shouldn't we be trying to do something about it? Who's wit me for nuclear winter? ![]() Seriously though if 2/3's agree it is happening, shouldn't we be doing everything we can to stop or slow it down? |

![]() Anyone can become a Dr.PhD.Soph.Phil.Gov.Univ.Doz. just by using google! ![]() I'm not sure if global warming is THE thing that will break our backs some time in the near future, but our polluting and raping of our planet surely will cause severe problems down the road. And if global warming is fake but trying to fix this fake problem will result in an overall improvement of the planet's condition, then I'm all for it. I think people should all do their part. It doesn't take much - just shop sensibly, and you'll help. Last edited by mores; 11-29-2009 at 03:44 PM. |
