The site promotes and makes available illegal ebooks, as Kenny mentions - these are books that are copyrighted and are not legally available.

Thanks, everyone, especially for pointing out that the download is illegal, as I have no desire to defraud authors and publishers of the fruit of their labor. If I can't obtain a legal copy, I won't bother with it at all. There are too many other good ebooks waiting to be read.

No problem Dr. I'm absolutely opposed to illegal downloads.

Thank you.

and since you mentioned John Irving. I'm about 3/4 through Twisted River, surprised to find Boulder, CO played a small role in the novel. Love how he's playing with the time-frames and incidents and fact/fiction. This is definitely one I'll want to re-read at some point.

Enjoy!

Thanks for setting us right, Don. I did think this site was OK because it was mentioned here (that's how I came across it), there's a charge for membership, and books appeared to be on (honour) loan. Very much off my list now. Thanks again for the warning. I'll now delete 'Time Traveler's Wife' and resort to my treebook copy. I can console myself with the knowledge that I at least paid due royalties once -- but that's no excuse for not digging deeper. The old, old story that if something seems to good to be true ... Cheers. Neil

The protagonist is really well developed, and you can feel her grief when her mother, the parent that doesn't beat her in front of the servants, dies. The beginning was a bit of a tear-jerker which isn't often the case in romance novels. There is a happy ending though. I plan to start Dancing Shoes and Honky-Tonk Blues by LuAnn McLane next.
I read lots of Romance and will usually post it on this thread.

I saw that one for sale, I will have to check it out!

Kenny:

For some stupid reason that I cannot explain, I stopped at 44% into John Irving's novel - which I LOVE - to read three other novels, which were very quick reads.

Now I'm back to John Irving, and still loving it. Maybe I don't want it to end.

I typically read 3-4 novels simultaneously, anyway.

You may actually finish before me!

To everyone else: If you enjoy John Irving, I think you may be in for a surprise. Irving loves his characters and it shows in his writing. There's a tenderness in his writing. Highly recommended.

Well, I've pretty much been a serial reader up until recently but I've been trading back and forth between a few fiction and non.

Why a surprise, if you actually enjoy Irving's writing? (I like it) - just being puzzled

I'm not the one in for a surprise. I love even his less "successful" novels.

What I meant is that some people turned away from some of his recent writing - his less critically received novels; whereas, this novel is a "return to form" for those people who love the John Irving they encountered in some of the earlier novels.

I thought "A Widow For One Year," was beautiful and bittersweet. It's one of my favorite novels by him. The fact is, for me, I admire all of his work. I collect him in First Edition hardcover, and am lucky to own his 2nd and 3rd novels in First Edition, in F/F condition.

I finally decided to read A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.

We went to see the movie and I wanted to see how truthfully it followed the story. So, I grabbed a copy here and started reading it. I must say, I didn't find it easy to read. I found the writing a bit, chaotic, for lack of a better word.

(oh, and most of the lines in the movie are directly taken from the book )

Aha! I didnøt know that some of his novels were considered 'less successful' so it just sounded a little 'odd' Interestingly though, I got stuck early in "Widow for a year" and haven't read anything by him since (tried "son of the circus" but got stuck as well). Perhaps I should try this book. Thanks very much for the recommendation

A few years back (as my daughter reminded me over Thanksgiving) we made it our goal to watch every version of A Christmas Carol that was on TV we must have watched 6-8 different ones and in addition I read the original for the same reason as you. It was very interesting to see the minor variations and to see how true to the original some of them were.

I love Dickens anyway.

I'm thinking you might want to read "The World According to Garp," [if you haven't already done so], since it's the novel that really helped to define a generation and the novel that brought him both critical and popular recognition.

Although his current novel is certainly a fine novel so far (and I'm also still reading it), it doesn't compare - for me - to the way "Garp" shattered my conceptions of characterizations and story-telling, and made me forever a fan of his writing.

The fact, when all is said and done, is that I realy like his writing. Perhaps, for you, he's just one of those authors that doesn't speak to you personally - which is OK, of course. And maybe that's it for me, in that I feel some kind of relationship to his writing.

I love "The world according to Garp" - I've read it several times. As well as "Hotel New Hampshire" and "The Cider Rules" (and a few more I can't remember? I remember there are a few more though )

Seriously, I was just plainly puzzled by your "logic": if one usually enjoyed Irving, one would be surprised - as this specific one was an good Irving novel. As if the other ones weren't good? Hmmm...

It just didn't add up In my mind Irving writes good novels. I haven't considered that the reason I didn't read his most current books to be any other than my personal 'failing' - that they just aren't to my personal taste. So what? I love "The Children's Book" by A. Byatt, but I can understand if it's not to everyone's taste However, I have a feeling that Byatt is to me, what Irving is to you.
