I decided to send it in for the firmware upgrade. The PRS-300 seems like a downgrade and I know I'm not going to be happy with the touchscreen on the PRS-600.

But the Sony eservice site is giving me a headache. Last night filled in the form for getting the firmware update. There was a button to click on for the UPS shipping label. A screen popped up and said session was timed out. I got an email with the repair request confirmation information, but no UPS label. I went to the eservice site this morning to see if I can get it from there after the fact. I tried typing in both the event id and the work order number to look up the status of my request and the Sony site says the numbers are invalid. *sigh* Time to call.

I had the same issue when I went to the repair form to check the status. So I called and was given the proper status. Sent in on Nov. 20 and returned on Nov 27. Would have been exactly a week if not for Thanksgiving.

Same thing happened to me, but when I called they were able to email me a label in less than ten minutes. Good luck!

So which is better? BBeB or ePub?

If I have a 505, is there a reason to re-download books I bought?

In my VERY HUMBLE opinion, the lrx books are fine just as they are. I'm keeping mine in that format. My updated reader handles them without any trouble and now I can read the epub books too. Best of both worlds.

ePub is better for forward compatibility. if you convert to ePub, you'll be able to take them with you should you decide to go to another reader in the future. Just means Amazon is out of the picture. But most others will do fine.

Are they allowing re-dos for free? I so, go for it and have it in both formats! If not, certainly stick with LRF. When you change readers you can just pay for the books again then.

I received my 500 back from Sony and all seems fine, though I'll have to wait for the store upgrade to be sure.

Heads up to those waiting on getting their 500s back: Sony requires a signature for UPS delivery (at least they did for me).

Fast turn-around and a free upgrade to a discontinued product - no complaining from me! Thanks, Sony.

I screwed up. I shipping my PRS-500 yesterday and forgot to include the signed form. I called Sony today and was given an email address to send the form to, but the email bounced. The address given was laredofulfillment@exchange.an.sony.com. Just a little poking around and it looks like the correct address should be laredofulfillment@exchange.am.sony.com or laredofulfillment@exchange.sony.com, but those are bouncing too.

Does anyone have the right email address? Or the phone number to fax it to?

It's laredofulfillmentexchange@am.sony.com!

It would have been helpful to detect the problem I had with the email address if exchange.am.sony.com didn't resolve.

$ host exchange.am.sony.com
exchange.am.sony.com has address 208.67.219.132
exchange.am.sony.com mail is handled by 10 mail.global.sprint.com.

Here's the fax number too: 956 725 4874

I sent mine back for the update nov 19 and hadnt heard anything so I gave them a call. First one told me it was at laredo and was waiting for me to pay $100 to exchange it and then I called laredo and at first they had no record of it ever arriving. When they did find it they said it had arrived on dec 3 and was getting the update and would be returned asap. Sheesh. I've been reading on the netbook for 2 weeks and it aint that great.

I had a great experience (thankfully) sending in my PRS-500 to upgrade: I shipped it out last week but it arrived at the repair center this Monday. To my surprise, I got back the Reader Thursday (3 day turnaround). Quick as a bee...

My Reader is back now!
The furthest a PRS-500 has had to go to get a firmware upgrade to my knowledge Wolfram|Alpha has Sydney, Australia to Laredo, Texas as 13 348 km (8294 miles), about 1/3 of the Earth's circumference.. 15 hours by plane, 10 hours at the speed of sound, 62.4 ms via light in fiber optic.. Linky
