I predict a major upset this time, team USA will win. They've gotten really good.
When the Boston Red Sox finally broke "the Curse of the Bambino", beat the Yankees in the playoffs, and won the World Series, I was amused. I'm a Yankee fan, but the Sox were the better team, and anything that could cause tens of thousands of fans to simultaneously excrete rectangular building blocks (if for different reasons) had something to recommend it.

If Team USA wins the World Cup, it will be an event surpassing the Sox winning the World Series, and the world as many soccer fans know it will have come to an end...

silly, or... a bit frightening (irrational fear of Masons : check). also, maybe i just need a nap, but i don't understand a word of this bit* :

Quote:
This is a French word, pronounced a-ko-say, which masonically is generally to be translated as Scottish Master. There are numerous Degrees under the same or a similar name; all of them, however, concurring in one particular, namely, that of detailing the method adopted for the preservation of the true Word. The American Freemason will understand the character of the system of Ecossaism, as it may be called, when he is told that the Select Master of his own Rite is really all Ecossais Degree. It is found, too, in many other Rites. Thus, in the French Rite, it is the Fifth Degree. In the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, the Thirteenth Degree or Knights of the Ninth Arch is properly an Ecossais Degree. The Ancient York Rite is without an Ecossais Degree, but its principles are set forth in the instructions Of the Royal Arch. Some idea of the extent to which these Degrees have been multiplied may be formed from the fact that Oliver has a list of eighty of them; Ragon enumerates eighty-three; and the Baron Tschoudy, first rejecting twenty-seven which he does not consider legitimate, retains a far greater number to whose purity he does not object.

*actually the entire page seemed like some sort of gibberish to me, but i didn't want to quote all of it.

They're not all frightening (I worked with more than a few at one stage, the worst I can manage about those lot is that they were irritating, arrogant and annoying. But then so were quite a few of the non-masons there...)

You know what would be scary? If someone managed to combine scientology with masons...

I know some masons. I used to work for a company owned/managed by Scientologists. I'll take the masons in a heartbeat.

(And I don't think you could successfully combine them even if you used the Large Hadron Collider. Some things just don't mix. )

The hot water in my house has mysterious become tepid water, except in the shower. There it's become stone cold water. And I'm still shivering.
I think that I shall have to find a plumber.

i did meet a mason once, although i didn't know it at the time ; my ex-boyfriend's mother is one. when he told me i said, "oh my god, now i know she's going to have to kill me." actually i thought the strangest thing was that it didn't seem to be a secret. i thought the masons were some sort of secret society meeting in hidden rooms in the dead of night, with passwords and secret handshakes to identify each other.

oh no ! what is up with the heating / plumbing / electricity today ?? first slite, now you. i really hope you get it sorted quickly ; i've had to live without hot water on tap (when my water heater died) and it is not fun, especially with hair like yours (my hair was about that length when it happened to me). it can be done. i heated huge pots of (cold) water on the stove, and then used them to wash. and i borrowed a friend's bathtub as well once or twice. it made me glad to live in an era of (mostly) modern conveniences and hot and cold running water on all floors. and it made me REALLY glad when i finally got hot water back ! that night i took such a long, hot shower i completely emptied the reservoir.

We could try it with a couple of scientologists first and see what happens...

The masons are a very open secret society - you can take tours of the grand lodge in London and find out how to go about joining (no guarantee you will succeed, mind, but...). The lot I used to work with had at least one meeting in one of the meeting rooms at work (admittedly I only found out about it because I refused to pay any attention to the "Kitchen closed" sign (well, I wanted a tea, and I wasn't going to walk over to the other side of the building(s) to get one) on the kitchen next to the room, and had a nose around...)

I'd be very surprised if they didn't have ways of identifying themselves to each other, though - it's very much (seen as) an "old boys network" in the UK, and it's a bit pointless if you don't know the other old boys

(Of course, this innocuous-ish public front could be covering something more sinister, but I'll stop there before I start to sound like a Dan Brown novel )

I wish I could fix it for you too, Patricia. It's so frustrating when something like that goes wrong. It's no fun needing to heat water on the stove in order to bathe or wash your hair. The only upside to this is that you still have water. I hope the situation can be remedied soon and doesn't cost you too much.
