tags or labels would be better than folders since then u could put multiple tags on a book and filter all your books in different ways. u could also have a tag view. this could work like gmail.

The thing is, that Amazon has a lot of competition from Sony and soon B&N plus others. So Amazon has to try to do things to keep competitive. What I think would actually give Amazon an edge would be to add ePub support.

I don't really think that ePub is much of a concern outside of communities of enthusiasts like this. Personally I think it would be nice if there was a universal file type that all publishers, retailers and ereader manufacturers could agree on. However, I recently discovered that my mother had purchased a K2 this summer, and if were start talking about ePub to her she wouldn't know what I was talking about and probably wouldn't care much. As long as she can keep getting the books she wants from Amazon at a reasonable price I don't think that it will ever really cross her radar screen.

This is true. But, when what will happen is when say someone asks what reader to get to a techy who does know of ePub, the Kindle might not be recommended. But I can see how to the average person it might not matter. But it will matter to those of us who have to support them as to what formats are supported.

I'm a bit of a techie and I would tell the average person asking for my recommendation that they should go with the Kindle because it is easy and seamless and Amazon provides excellent customer service themselves. My thoughts may change when nooks start actually getting into people's hands, but so far I really don't see anything about the nook that would make me recommend it. The hard core techies may give long winded reasons about why ePub is better, but honestly most average folks just want it to work. They don't really give a hang about the perceived advantages of ePub over AZW or Topaz files. Their eyes will just start to glaze over.

I see it akin to someone not technically inclined what sort of digital music player they should get. Unless they have some sort of odd requirement or are an audiophile there is little reason for them not to get an iPod. iPods and iTunes software is easy and intuitive, hard for the non-techies to really screw up.

Epub sounds nice, but in my library (not a public library) everything electronic is in PDF or HTML in a 95/5 distribution. I have never seen anything in epub (I monitor over 70,000 journals.)

Epub on a reader would not do me any good and the K2 screen is too small for most PDF's (with my 50+ eyes).

The DX would be probably be my best bet but I can't afford one right now (my son's a freshman in a NYC college.)

Sorry, I got a bit off-topic but searching is not a substitute for organization. I search our collection every day and it is frustrating except when using ISSN and ISBN.

So, I guess I am one of those people who doesn't understand about epub and I am curious. Why is it better than other formats? Either way, books will have drm, won't they?

I think that for the near future you are correct, most of the files sold by the big retailers (Amazon, B&N, Sony, etc) will have some sort of DRM. Until we can progress at least to the point where DRM has morphed into social DRM (with say a watermark on each file) I think that the file type is more or less a moot point. It doesn't matter if my Kindle can or can't handle the same file type that someones nook can if they are locked up by a restrictive DRM. Besides, I imagine that it would only take a firmware update of most ereaders to support whichever file type were to become dominant.
