So yea, I've mysteriously been unable to access my website outside port 80 for the best part of a day.

Cue yelling at ISP. Midway through, tech goes "oh, wait a moment". And then "try that".
I love ISP incompetence causing issues, really.

Sweetpea - I have PSP 7.01 which is still a very powerful little tool, for all that it's from 2001. It could of been a serious competitor in the lower/mid end of the graphics editing space, but noo. Sigh. (Oh, and the "latest" (2007 on) versions have spyware).

I'd love a replacement, but... (GIMPShop isn't being updated, no way I'm fighting the normal GIMP interface - it's on a par with the old Blender one - Photoshop is too expensive and...what else is there?)

Me too. I can't stand GIMP, never could. I know, heresy to all you Linux people out there, but it just does not do what I want it to do in a way I want it to do it.
I can use Photoshop; but I much, much, much prefer my trusty PSP.

I found 'Beginning Gimp: from novice to professional' by Akkana Peck a very useful guide to Gimp (but I'm nowhere near being professional yet).

On Linux, the Gimp rules, but that's as much because there isn't a Linux port of Photoshop as anything else.

That's valid, and I know an assortment of folks like you. On Windows, I mostly use Paint.NET, a free, open source paint program intended to replace the bundled Windows Paint app. I have the Gimp and an older Photoshop, but seldom need either.

Under Linux, I also use MTPaint, which is not as feature filled as the Gimp, but smaller, faster, and runs on older lower end hardware.

I have an old copy of PhotoShop vs. 6.x that served me well for years, but I haven't been able to get it installed on Windows 7. So I'm currently without! Maybe I'll look into PSP.

It's exactly this sort of thing that is making me leery of Windows 7....

rather awkward warning, though "no guarantee on 64bit systems"

I really hate it when operating systems lie to you.

Having made the ludicrous decision to make file types be part of the file name, WHY then lie to the user about the filename and pretend that the extension doesn't exist?

And why has Apple followed Microsoft into this insanity?

The first thing I do on any machine I use is turn off this preference that hides file name extensions.

I'm with you there. I don't know how people use their computer without the extension displayed.

Have they? I can see the extensions in finder. Hmmm... but maybe I changed a preference somewhere over a year ago and just don't remember.

Maybe I'll just have to buy a new Mac so I can check.

That has GOT to be the most creative excuse for buying a new machine I have EVER seen.
