Hi!

Awake here ! I'm in Louisville , KY. I am really interested in getting an e-reader but I do not know which one to get. Right now it sounds like an electronic dispute like the one between the old VHS and BETA which one would be the standard video format (old school- I know). VHS was for home use and all the professional production was done on BETA.
With CD's and DVD's that never was the case.
Will there ever be one compatible system for e- books so any e-reader could use books from any source?

BeBook with a 6" screen can read PDFs in landscape mode, but it isn't practical and not all documents can be read this way as the letters are still too small. My textbooks can't

Better wait for V9 or get an iRex, or maybe a tablet PC or small notebook. That's what I was using before I got my BeBook and what I still use if I need to read large PDFs: light laptops/tablets.

With the impending release of the Kindle DX, can we expect the V9 and other 9.7" readers soon?

Likely, it depends on the availability of the new plastic backed screens. I think everyone is waiting for that for reliability and ruggedness reasons. It is not clear what Kindle DX may have, but hopefully it is also plastic backed screen. It may be that they are on the leading edge of this release which was promised about this time.

Current devices use a glass backing on the screen and this can be broken and the risk goes up as the size gets bigger.

I would just like to say thank you for all this helpful information on which reader handles PDF's the best. Unfortunately the Irex Digital Reader is the Lotus of readers. My budget is more to the yugo. lol I am trying to decide which reader I would like to buy someday or if I get really luck I might win in the giveaway contest.

The current COOL-ER firmware doesn't resample, or rather it pixel resamples instead of subpixel/multisampling, so it doesn't look as good as it could. See the first image here and the surrounding notes for details on the problem.

At higher font sizes, PDF formatting breaks. If you read ordinary books on it, it might be fine (*shrug*), but technical manuals or books where heavy table formatting is important suck with broken formatting.

Do note, I'm new to ebook readers (but come from a graphics background), so for all I know this could be a common (though it's a totally fixable) problem.

Christmas is coming....and I am wondering if we have been provided with a solution to the pdf problem.

I would like to read simple pdfs from university and e-books in pdf format.
Is there a e-reader on the market that fulfills my needs without complicated converting of documents and so on?

None that I am aware of. An announcement only is scheduled by Plastic Logic but I seriously doubt it is a release announcement.

Thank you DaleDe.

I am following Plastic Logic's e-reader right now, soon to be released in early 2010 boisting a price competitive to kindle and sony e-reader products. It has bendable plastic technology with 8x11 e-ink screen fashioning multi file format support /including our favorite PDF and touch screen interface.
Quote:
A smaller or larger reader screen doesn't matter in viewing a whole pdf page in the same way that a ten inch computer screen can view a pdf at 100% just the same as a larger one.
I think that the Sony Reader did have some compatibility issues with PDFs around a year ago and maybe sooner, but they've more recently updated their software with more Adobe support. I can say from my own experience that my sony reader has had very little compatibility or viewing issues, if any that I can recall.
So I really do think that a sony reader pocket edition is fine and great for what you're looking for. It's got 512mb of memory and is only $200 US (must/might be similar in the UK). There's also the more expensive touch screen model that I have little idea about, or the just-previous model that I have and like (prs-505) that has a little bit of a bigger screen than the pocket edition and has two memory card slots if you'd need them.
Seems like I am stuck with these two options.

From what I've been reading Plastic Logic is good in rendering PDFs. They say they'll release it Jan 2010.
