You are right, however a simple free proxy server will solve those problems. It is none of anyones business where in the world we are.

As for equating piracy with stealing - that is a simplistic argument designed to engage emotions rather than logic. Proper stealing is when you take something from the owner, and as a result he doesn't have this thing any more, ending up poorer than he was. Piracy is merely a lost opportunity for profit, based on an imperfect business model. Now, if that opportunity was lost because the pirate deliberately chooses not to reward the author for his work, that's clearly wrong. Not quite stealing, but freeriding at the very least, and denying the author his just rewards out of greed. But if that opportunity was never created by the publishers in the first place, if the pirate wanted to pay his money like everyone else but was rejected due to idiotic business practices, whose fault is that? No-one's ended up poorer than they were. The author has not of course become richer, but only because his publishers have wasted an opportunity to make a profit for themselves and for the author. But instead of fixing their broken business model they are trying to shift the blame for lost profit on their potential customers and send them on a guilt trip through emotionally loaded verbiage.

meraxes, I'm wondering if you came here for anything other reason than to push your book theft agenda? Fourteen posts all right in this thread and continuing to reiterate the same tired (and incorrect) arguments over and over. |

kennyc, why I came here is none of your concern. As for the tiredness and incorrectness of my arguments, these qualities should be demonstrated by your own counterarguments (which have been sadly lacking). Emoticons, sweeping generalizations and borderline insults are poor substitutes for logic and reason.

I certainly believe you-I've seen you posting elsewhere on MR & 'Grand Wizard' didn't stir my memories at all until I saw it in connection with apartheid. To anyone without my memories, it's probably meaningless. Probably shouldn't even have bothered posting about it as it's just my personal foible. Sorry.

meraxes makes an interesting point...piracy is easy to spot if it means stealing something instead of buying, however, if you "steal" something that you can't actually buy...then it really starts getting weird... This is something the publishers have to start thinking about, it's the same lesson the music industry had to learn...if it is easier to steal something (because buying means either DRM madness or in some cases unavailability of the product due to geo-restrictions) then something is wrong. Stealing is always cheaper, so buying has to be easier to be attractive as an option at all... |

If my car is not for sale, but you take it, that is still theft. I will admit is gets a bit different when you are talking about intellectual property, but as far as I'm concerned the same rules apply. If you take something that belongs to me without my permission, that is theft.

That's nice. The law says unauthorised copying is a civil offence and theft is a criminal offence. Every time you say theft, I'll immediately ignore the rest of your argument and home in on the that, because it's blatent misrepresentation and makes your argument - regardless what it is - a bad joke.
