I talked with SONY Canada
They can do the upgrade here but I have to pay for the shipping and the labor

I asked them what's the difference to SONY if I ship from here to the suburb or from within the US to within the US...
Apparently SONY Canada <> SONY USA <> SONY

If they do remove LRF, that's crummy because it works so much better than ePUB on the Reader (headers and justification).

There is a possible reason: If the upgrade is based on reformatting of the internal memory, etc. (and not a hardware upgrade), then some earlier comments here suggested that the 500's limited memory would be very tight to include firmware support all of these formats. Given Sony's move to ePub and their intention to allow purchased books to be reloaded in this format, they could possibly ditch lrf/lrx support to make the 500 upgrade feasible.

Just speculating, though.

So much for people who knowingly buy an unsupported product and then complain when they don't get support.

The 500 was never officially sold in Canada, eh?

I would think Sony won't be ditching BBeB support. If Sony was to do that, then all the eBooks 500 owners have would be useless and that would cause a major uproar.

And when you get your 500 back, how long do you want to wait until you can redownload in ePub? All the books you have will be mostly BBeB. I don't think Sony would be dumb enough to remove BBeB.

I haven't been on Mobileread in quite some time. I decide to come back see what's going on in the world of ebooks. To say the least, I'm glad I did. An hour later and my PRS 500 is all packed and ready to go. Smart move by Sony, me thinks.

Yeah, based on the recent comments it seems unlikely to remove BBeB support. I now suspect there might be a hardware mod in this upgrade. Again, just speculating (with a lousy track record!).

I will not send Sony my 500. Theoretically, since I'm not in the US, I'm not supposed to have a 500. When the last library upgrade came up, my 500 could not be mounted in, even though my device is registered. I get messages saying that it is not compatible to the region I live in. Can this really entice me to send it?

It's over with Sony for me now, I'll try the Opus as soon as I can.

What kind of negativity is that? Seriously! Of course you can own a PRS-500 anywhere you dam well want to! Sony feel better about selling them to people in countries where they sell books, that's all.
If you're having problems with using your PRS-500, maybe you should talk to Sony and have them sort out your problem. If it's just to do with buying books from the store, that's different. But you should be able to use it anywhere..
