I've been a member of MR for one year as of today, but not that active recently. I think I'll stick close to the lounge where there always seems to be a sense of civility and differences in opinion don't lead to arguments or worse.

If I had to guess, I'd say "We never thought anyone would still be using COBOL now, but there are still billions of lines of it in production, and no one is likely to pay to get those apps rewritten in something else, so we are stuck maintaining COBOL for the foreseeable future. Given that, we might as well try to upgrade the language to make it a little cooler and less painful to work on..."

I'm more bemused by the POSIX subsystems in z/OS. I can has Unix filesystem and use vi on my mainframe?
