ummm..... no. Sony never authorized sale of the 500 outside of the US. YOU decided to buy a device that YOU knew up front was not supported. Sony is being straightforward and consistent with their policy, that you were fully apprised of. There is no blaming Sony here.

I boxed up and sent my beloved PRS-500 off for rejuvenation to the Laredo, Texas Sony Service Center today. I enclosed one copy of the form generated from the SonyStyle website, plus the confirming e-mail with the work order number, and (just in case) a letter stating that I wanted the free firmware update. With the prepaid/preprinted label from UPS, I didn't have to do any paperwork at all at the local UPS Store.

I just hope everything goes smoothly and I get my Reader back soon. If my Reader isn't back by the first week in December, I'm going to get very cranky.

What are they promising (if anything) as turn-around time?

I'm doing mine tomorrow. There were so many times I thought about giving my 500 away to someone or even throwing it out once or twice because I never use it since I have my Iliad and DR1000S but this would just be so awesome. I used to use the NY Public Library's ebook section but a lot of the books I wanted to read were in ePub so I couldn't read it, (Irex is all Mobi right now) this would solve my problem and give me a smaller reader to use again. Sa-weet

Thank you Sony Claus!

Warranty Status: Out of Warranty

Note: Your model is part of a Sony exchange program. However, the direct
replacement is not currently available. You can send your
unit in and you will be contacted for more information and alternative
models available.

Terms and conditions:
---------------------
Based upon the information you entered, your unit appears to qualify for the Flat Rate pricing quoted above. Flat Rate pricing does not apply to non-consumer products, units requiring replacement of the display device (such as: projection and TV picture tubes, optical blocks, plasma and LCD panels), any condition resulting from physical abuse, misuse, or excessive wear, units older than seven (7) years from last market date or damage resulting from prior unauthorized service. If, upon examination, it is determined that your unit does not qualify for Flat Rate pricing, then a parts and labor repair quote will be given to you.

Ellen
I also got the message on the website that my 500 was out of warranty.
My experience with Sony has been easy. I could not print out the label so I called the Sony# and asked if the person knew about the update to the 500. He said he did and he filled out an order to mail me the mailer and another order to provide a work order for the upgrade. It did take about 10 minutes before it was completed and checked but he said everything was fine and ended by giving me a confirmation #.
You might want to try what I did if you have any online problems.

Does anybody have any idea on how heavy the PRS-500 is so I can check what the postage would be? I'm still mulling this thing over...thanks.

PRS-900 offer?

So the PRS-900 is now available for pre-order. Will Sony offer $100 off that model with a PRS-500 trade-in?
