Say, how do you read a book on the 360? I mean, I know you read with your eyes and brain but do you normally use it on Landscape or Portrait?

The screenshots are pretty amazing but they don't look the real screen size, I would like to see if the screen is too tiny.

Landscape reading gives more width but it looks like reading half a page each time, so for those like me that read real fast it may be frustrating to change pages each 10 seconds...

@coredump

I read quite fast, and got used to changing pages every few seconds. For me it happens automatically now...

cheers,

kaas

p.s.: I prefer to hold the reader like a book ( vertically )

A 5 inch reader is a 5 inch reader. It is going to require more page turns no matter how you hold the reader. The good new is, 1) it sounds like the 360 offers a boatload of customization and 2) it isn't an Opus!

If you use a larger than average font, then landscape will get more words per line. For standard and small font sizes, portrait is ok even on a 5" screen.

The screen is much smaller than you expect before seeing one for the first time, and a 5" screen is significantly smaller than a 6" screen. To get an idea of what they look like, print the 600x800 bitmap screenshots to paper at 200 dpi (76 × 102mm) for a 5" screen or 167 dpi (90 × 120mm) for a 6" screen. The actual screen will look very similar, except that the background will be grey rather than white.

Hehe I am trying to do that here but Gimp is not helping very much, but I will draw squares of the same size and test

Please don't forget that while 6 inch readers offer sidnificantly more (screen) real estate, they usually waste quite a bit of it with margins. No such issue with the pocketbook...

I read in Portrait mode.
I was used to 6 inch screen, so I was a little bit apprehensive about how much text I can comfortably squeeze into 5 inch screen. I am very pleased with the experience so far.
The display is very sharp, the serif Droid font (that I have downloaded and installed alongside default fonts) seems to be much better hinted and rendered than comparable size serif font on my old PRS-500. I have scoured forums for font suggestions and I am going to try them all and find the one that is perfect for me.

I have tweaked the config file for FBReader manually, and now I am very pleased with the way the text is displayed. I even use full justification now. Hyphenation seems to make great difference and now, for the first time, I see pages with very uniform "Typographical grey" on my portable e-book reading device. I do not know what algorithm the FBReader uses to optimize line breaks and hyphenation but the text does not look half bad from typographical point of view.

With the new Epson controller the flash during page turn is very quick. Much quicker than "manual" turning of page in a paper book can ever be ;-)

Um, no. The *book* may be formatted with too-large margins, but the ereader just displays what the book tells it to.

Most of my books have very tiny (2pt) margins, and if they don't, I reformat them.

I have a 505. The Kindle may be different, but don't lump all readers together.

With the PocketBook and FBReader you can change the margins while in the book , as well as font, line spacing, hyphenations(on or off), and line breaks

Great, great review! I'm very interested in this e-book reader and am seriously considering it. The click-sound worries me though, my husband is a verrrry light sleeper and hears the click on my PRS-500 (Click? What click? Exactly.). It's so silly that a fantastic device, with so many great, great features gets defeated (for me anyway) by a button click.

Sure, but the poor guy shouldn't have to wear earplugs if the button wasn't so exuberant. Anyway, I might still buy the device as the features really do attract me.

If he can hear a PRS-500 button "click" then I would say he really would get a better nights sleep if he did wear the ear plugs. You can't even really feel them after a few minutes.

heh)))) I'm not bothered by PB360s clicks at all, though I'm very acute... hearer), and usually very easily disturbed by sounds))

Btw, there's one great recipe about this clicks - don't push big buttons!!! I came to PB 360 from PB301, so I'm used to use only 4 'quiet' buttons around "ok" central one))).
