I really wish we would celebrate closer to when the Canadians have theirs. not only is it closer to a realistic harvest time for most of us, it wouldn't be so overhelmed by that giant commercialized holiday

At least it's not on Dec. 4, as was that first English Thanksgiving. That would be even closer to Christmas!

BTW, my son was born on Dec. 28. To this day he hasn't forgiven us!

yes, I know... which is also late for "harvest". then again, "Christmas" as the celebration we know really wasn't celebrated as the blow out holiday it is now until Victorian times.

I've always felt sorry for December and January birthday people. my Dad, sis, 3 of 3 cousins on one side and 5 of 7 cousins on the other are all July babies. both of my kids are September. there's never been a lot of competition for the winter holidays. it's just as well... it'd only get in the way of ski season!

Turkey and dressing isn't fattening if you put enough gravy on them. The gravy covers up the calories.

Berkeley Plantation Thanksgiving Festival
Although it's too late to attend the Berkeley Plantation Thanksgiving Festival this year "to see where English colonists first held a thanksgiving celebration, one year and 17 days prior to the landing of the Pilgrims," there are other events planned throughout the month of November:

I'd like to take this time to note that the Jamestown settlers weren't the first to hold a Thanksgiving celebration in my country, only the first to hold one in English. Before the Virginian celebration, French Huguenot colonists, on June 30, 1564, celebrated Thanksgiving at a settlement near Jacksonville, Florida. And before that, there was a Spanish Thanksgiving in Texas celebrated by explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado and 1,500 of his men in May of 1541.
