Which one do you have? What do you like most about it?

I sooooooo like to have an ebook reader device. I love the idea of not carrying tons of books, especially while I am always on the go (for work with waiting times!).
Anyways, I first thought an Ipod would be great, because you have so much more than reading ebooks; music, games.....but think about it, there is only one game I like to play and music, yes its nice to have music in the car while Im driving. Not so many extra's than the ebook reader that I definitely like most of all. What is your experience? iPods have smaller screen than the 5" Sony I would like (and is affordable for me).

A dedicated device is always going to be better at its job than a multipurpose one. Yes, the iPod Touch can be used as a bookreader, and it works "OK", but the battery life is short and the screen small. A dedicated bookreader has a battery life measured in weeks rather than hours, and eInk screens are much easier on the eye than backlit LCD screens.

If you really do want to be able to listen to music on your ebook reader as well as read, you can always give the Sony 505 / 600 a try, they can play mp3s. I have to admit that I have not tried out this feature yet.

Until I got my reader, I regularly had 3+ books in my (huge) purse all the time. Now, I only have my reader, and my shoulders are thankful! E-ink really is fantastic. I used to read ebooks off of my computer screen, and would get strong headaches after a few hours of reading. Now, I upload all of my school notes and other such reading as well onto my reader, and find that I "sneak" a lot more studying into my day - no more messing with bulky piles of photocopied papers on the bus, while waiting in line at the bank, etc.

AND during boring classes I pretend I am taking notes, but I am REALLY reading something juicy on my Sony 505. Love it!

I'm an old stick-in-the-mud. I've been dreaming of a single-fuction ebook-dedicated reader for the past fifteen years. Now that I have one (the excellent 505) I certainly want no distractions. I want to read unadulterated words on a page. That's all. Neil

Don't bother - to say that it is "primitive" would be doing primitive things an injustice . It will only play in order of ID3 tag; no selection of artist, album or anything else. Moreover it's dangerous - there is a "pause", but not a "stop", the result of which is that it's all too easy to leave it playing accidentally and flatten the battery.

Even the cheapest of dedicated MP3 players is enormously better.

Like the iPod its nice to have music, games or anything like that but if it comes to a dedicated ebook reader I don't care for music so one that is also mp3 is not my choice. I think I will go for a Sony ebook reader. You have quite a selection of ebook readers and devices....why you have so manhy?

I have a Sony PRS-505 and a Sony PRS-600 and I have to say that I don't think I could do without either of them. The Sony PRS-300 is at a decent price, but I'm sure you could find a 505 for maybe $50 more and it would be able to view pictures and play music. What I love most about my reader....hmmmm....not sure there are enough words, lol! The screen (on both devices, although people argue that the 505/300's screen is much nicer than the 600) is very crisp and clear, and is very natural to read. I didn't know anything about them 9 months ago and now if you tried to take mine away I'd beat you up, lol! There's no eyestrain, so if you read for long periods of time it won't be a problem. If you have a Borders/Best Buy/Sony store anywhere close to you I'd say go check out the demo models.
It sux b/c if you want to check out Amazon's Kindle there aren't any places to go to try it out and see if that's what you might want.
It depends largely on what you're reading; I bought my Sony and I haven't looked back!

By the way, welcome to the forums!!!

Thank you!
I am quite interested in getting a Sony PRS-505S. Actually I think this is one I can get my hands on in Canada! Havent seen another one than just the Sony's at Best Buy and Future Shop. From what I read on the internet (Futureshop has them in boxes, cant even show a demo!) this one is pretty good! I first wanted to have an iPod but honestly I would use the ebook library more than games or music.
You say the 505 even has music?

I don't have an iPod so I don't know what that would be like, lol! Yeah, you can download MP3's as well as books and (if you want) pictures, they're in black and white but nontheless...to be honest I like the 505 better than the PRS-300, bigger screen and more features. Very simple to use, exactly like the PRS-300 with little difference:
Screen is 1" bigger
Plays music and allows you to view/store pics
Has SD card and Pro Duo card storage

If you're leaning toward the 505 get it. The worst thing that could happen would be you have to send it back All I know is that I love mine, even tho I have my PRS-600 I still use the 505.

I have a PRS-505 and I can say I like only 3 things about it:

Decent battery life
Good balance of thickness/thinness
Non-proprietary input (SD/USB)

Beyond those, I dislike just about everything about it.

I have my Sony PRS600 for a couple of weeks now. Never had an eReader before and didn't have the chance of viewing any of them in Store (yeah, yeah, Oz isn't as technologically advanced as they think they are).

The purpose was soley so I can take books on the upcoming holiday (going away for 6 weeks). Downloaded heaps of books in the first few days - gotta start again as I read most of them already.

It stores books and that's all i want it to do. I don't need a 1-for-everything thingies. That would just confuse me and I usually don't hear anything when I read so why bother.

Oh, and btw - anyone thinking of touching my Reader better makes sure the health insurance is up-to-date.
