I use both the internal memory and a 1GB SD memory card in my reader (a PRS-505). I like to carry a large number of ebooks on my device, and the addition of an SD card gives me more than enough room for all of the ebooks I want to carry on my reader. It also gives me room for pictures and audio files when I want to carry them.
As far as how I organize my books, I divide them by genre and put each genre either completely on the memory card or entirely on the SD card. Due to their size, I also put music and pictures on my memory card. |

I think it boils down to personal choice. Whether you want enough ebooks to last you for awhile and then add some new ones later on or do you want to have a lifetime of ebooks to choose from which you will only read a small amount of them.

Internal memory for books I'm meaning to read or are reading, and SD-card for a collection of books already read and downloaded news-feeds. If I want to reread a book I just pop in the SD-card.
I was planning on putting everything on an SD-card till I read about battery-draining. Exactly how bad is the battery draining anyway, does it mean it's still using the battery while not turning pages or how does it work? |

I guess it depends on what you expect. I have all my books on the SD card. I use the reader every day, and read quite a bit. It always comes as a suprise when I notice that the battery is getting lower, as it seems to last for a very long time between charges - at least a week and it doesn't take very long to recharge it.

I usually have 2 memory sticks I store in cover (not in the reader), one holds pictures and the other holds most of my library plus some reference books. This is so in case I want to show a picture to somebody or read a map (I keep maps too, very handy) or I want to check the dictionary or some reference book, I just pop in the memory stick.

Battery drain with the SD card is BAD. It at least halves your battery life. In standby mode (unused, not switched off), my battery does not move much, maybe 1 unit per week. With SD card battery meter goes down about 1 unit per day.

I have adhesive tape over my card slots to prevent dust from getting in.

I had been using an SD card, but am not happy when I try to read a book stored on the card. It is slow. After reading some of these comments, I am definately going to switch! Thanks everyone!

Most of my fantasy or science fiction I just labeled by series name and not general category. This keeps my general categories for these two areas low and able to keep on either internal or SD memory. |
